Wolves 1 Man United 1: “another Neves-esque classic goal” The Verdict thread

The more I think about VAR the more I think it should be some kind of challenge system for the manager and captain, 2 challenges each per game. That way only things that look obviously wrong will be challenged so only the ‘howler’ decisions will get reversed.

No one would have challenged the goal yesterday or Donck,’s last week. Same as Sterling’s 1mm offside shoulder last week.

Things like blatant dives being missed, someone 2 yards offside scoring a goal or scoring with an arm would all get challenged and reversed and the game wouldn’t get as ruined for the fans.

Think the thing with Traore was he actually looked like a functioning member of the team. Previously when he has played any positive he has brought has been outweighed by the imbalance he has caused us. Since pre season he has gradually looked like he has understood the role. And his movement off the ball has improved. If he can continue at this rate he will be a very useful option to rotate our wing backs when we have 3 games a week and give us a player who can beat players and be effective with it

I think moving to back-up RWB has done him good. As a forward he was frustrating and whatever the team we're doing with him wasn't quite working, just didn't seem to learn in some aspects. Last night you could literally see him doing a very basic "show your man outside". I'm thinking going to RWB has enabled the team to go through some basics/defending with him, which for some reason (was at Barca for years!) he needs.

Another point is I think Traore would do better with Vallejo there rather than Bennett. He can keep it simple and knock it back when needed - Bennett can only really knock it back again to Coady and that right side is a bit of a void. Vallejo already showed us a lovely first time pass over the top from a knock back. Dendoncker's physicality helps cover that side

Traore's performance was good and I think made to look better because Doc was so poor. Nuno got that wrong, he clearly wasn't right after 10 minutes and should've been subbed. Bloody brave and not very Nuno to bring Traore on for Doc and he repaid that faith well. Because our wing backs are so important in knocked everybody else out of shape and means our game doesn't work and makes us vulnerable down the flanks. Utd's press would've been easily countered, as it was for large parts of the second half, if we had a functioning RWB.

This. Watched at home so might get a better look at Doc from Mol. But he looked unfit throughout and for 5 mins looked like he had taken a knock on the leg? At one point Dendoncker was working like a madman covering on the right which knocked everything out of place.

after about 10 mins Doc looked like he had concussion. He simply couldn't run, it was all very odd.

On Traore, whilst he is rightly getting praised for changing the game going forward he also did some sound defending. One right at the end from a Utd corner, the ball was going across the area and the United player was steaming into shoot and got himself between the ball and the player, protected the ball and got whacked by the incoming player to win us a free kick. All very sensible and not Traore like at all. Early days but we might have cracked it with him

Bang on, I was really impressed with the defensive side of his game as much as the attacking side.

you see how many times they (Wolves) went through him?

Was it him that Benno wiped out? If so, the answer is once. If not, then zero

I think that was Rashford?

Also what about McTominay's challenge on Traore in the first half? He was totally out of control, not even a free kick or word from ref.

Also Maguire jumped in with 2 feet in the 2nd half, fortunately (for I think Jota) he got the ball, but again totally out of control. Nothing from ref or even the commentary team. Both challenges far worse than Boly's (as an example) or even Vardy's that he got sent off for on Doherty at Leicester.

Bollocks.

Does anyone else think Adama has trimmed down slightly?
Last season his upper body looked too big, this season he looks less muscle bound. Looks a bit trimmer around the cheat area.

Traore didn’t play the first half.

Well, I survived the anticipated verbal jousting in the pub beforehand!

Man U are a much improved unit from last year. Wan Bissaka and James give them a lot of pace and movement.
That said, though they had a lot of possession, they didn't really create a huge amount, though their goal was really well taken.

I thought we cancelled each other out a lot last night. First half we never really got going. 2nd half we were much better, and very dynamic. Traore was exceptional in my view - it looks like the coaching team are getting through to him, and whilst there is a way to go, I am now exceptionally optimistic about where this project could end up. After 10 mins of him being on the pitch, our whole team was constantly looking to give him the ball, and he frequently was very effective with it. His crossing is developing too. Only poor moment was when he broke through and shot appallingly. It comes to something when Jota is moving over to be closer to him, and you can see all of Raul, Jota, Neves and Moutinho all looking for a way to get the ball out to him. Every time he was looking to create.

Confused by the comments regarding Bennett. For me he was our best defender. Proper 7/10 performance. Boly was also good, but both he and Coady misplaced a few passes. Jonny was absolutely brilliant, I am so glad we've managed to sign him permanently.

Patricio was superb. When we originally signed him, I wasn't sure we needed the upgrade. Now, I know it was the right decision. He's a superb keeper.

Neto looks like he's got something to me. Seems to have a style and attitude similar to Jota. I look forward to seeing him develop. And he's fucking rapid too. With him on one side, and an effective adama on the other, we could be fucking frightening!

I also want to add in my customary "how good is Moutinho" statement.

Looking forward to sunday!

Also, a couple of people around me were moaning the ref gave man u every decision. Didn't seem that way to me, though agree with others re dan james. Could be an exceptional player if he cuts out the cheating - because that is what it is, cheating. Not gamesmanship, it's fucking cheating, lets call it what it is.

Also, a hell of a lot of balls/ricochets etc simply didn't drop for us last night, they invariably fell to a utd player.

Utd will be interesting this season. They won't be quite like we were under Zenga, which is how I felt they may go. They're improved, and quick. Not sure how creative they will be long term, as we kept their chances to a minimum, but Solskjaer is not longer in my expected sackings.

Didn’t seem like it to me, I was looking at the screens waiting for the VAR logo and didn’t see it so presumed there was no review. Still don’t think it was a penalty either, if we’d done that and been awarded it I’d have been pissing myself laughing. Pure and blatant dive, he was already going down before he made any contact with Coady.

All penalties are checked by VAR as a matter of course, it's only if they have a second look that it's official so to speak.

As the game is, it's a penalty. Personally I'd like to see it as it would have been 25 years ago when the centre half would have just pissed himself laughing, but as it is it's a penalty. Let's be honest Jota tries the catching the foot trick loads.

Completely agree with you on Dan James - cheating bastard.

I still think Ole will get the boot before the end of the season - Utd fans are so entitled, if they’re not in the top 4 in the last third of the season, their whinging will reach epic levels and the glazers will get rid before the focus goes on them again.

And rarely gets penalties. That Pogba dive wasn’t a penalty.

Well 2 refs disagree with you on that one
