Wolves 1 Man United 1: “another Neves-esque classic goal” The Verdict thread

I don't like VAR, but it has been introduced as a means of combating the constant post match criticism of referees by managers (and fans too). Every game had managers moaning about referees in their interviews, so what do the powers that be come up with to stem the tide of criticism? VAR. So any manager or fan that has moaned about the quality of refereeing really has no leg to stand on when complaining about VAR.

There was. Ref pointed to the spot then stood with his hand on his ear waiting for confirmation. Took about 30 seconds then he pointed at the spot again. Essentially on that one it was an easy for VAR as all they are looking at is if the ref has got it horribly wrong. Pogba knew what he doing and played for the pen but it was one. Simply task for VAR.

Didn’t seem like it to me, I was looking at the screens waiting for the VAR logo and didn’t see it so presumed there was no review. Still don’t think it was a penalty either, if we’d done that and been awarded it I’d have been pissing myself laughing. Pure and blatant dive, he was already going down before he made any contact with Coady.

They only do the screens if after the 1st watch they are not sure or think the ref has got it wrong. On the penalty the VAR went with the refs call, so no need to look any further at it.

As someone watching the game at home last night VAR didn't work for me either. A few minutes of people drawing random lines on a screen to show if Joao's shoulder was offside or not.

VAR has impacted the game in a really negative way (and yes, I'm well aware this is confirmation bias for me!)

I've now experienced it in a ground, wholesale confusion and no one knowing what was happening and at home, weird lines and reversal of stills. Not fun.

As a Sky customer i would just like to apologise for VAR, apparently it's all my fault :icon_confused:

Don't think Neves was quite as bad as is being made out here, apart from one or two very obviously misplaced passes. Certainly not his best game, don't get me wrong.

If I was going to pick a MOTM for Wolves It'd be Jonny or Patrício I think.

Man Utd were excellent last night though and I think we'll look back on that point quite favourably at the end of the season.

Fuck VAR. Hate it. I don't care what anybody says, it genuinely ruined the celebration for an absolute wonder goal against United in front of the South Bank.

This. Agree with all of it.

Do you think anyone will discuss Man U penalty taker decision as i don't think they quite covered it on the telly last night ??

I'm also a now TV subscriber so partly to blame :)

I am delighted for Traore. You can see him getting more confident with each game now and last night was his best performance in a Wolves shirt by some distance. I don't know what was wrong with Doc but it was like we were playing with 10 men at times during the first half. Traore coming on made a hell of a difference.

Neves goal was sublime. Almost ruined by VAR but what a hit! No GK was saving that one. The noise from the crowd sounded deafening on the TV when it went in.

Great save by Patricio on the pen. Kept his foot on the line perfectly too so VAR couldn't ruin that one for us. Definite penalty for me. Pogba made the most of it but it was a poor challenge and he caught his foot. You could tell from Coady's body language that he knew he'd fucked up.

Good little cameo by Neto. Even after Pyunik I still had my doubts as to whether he could cut it in the bigger games but he looked impressive yesterday in the short time he was on the pitch. I am happy to be proved wrong about him.

Special mention for Donck. I thought he was excellent. He was everywhere and I don't know how he manages to cover so much ground over 90 mins.

I hate VAR. It is shit. I'd rather put up with mistakes than have to stop celebrating for the sake of someone's arm being a few mm offside. If Neves goal had been disallowed I think I would have cried!

Neves' goal being chalked off may legitimately have been it for me and football.

A world-class goal like that being chalked off by VAR would have been a crime against the art of football.

Think the thing with Traore was he actually looked like a functioning member of the team. Previously when he has played any positive he has brought has been outweighed by the imbalance he has caused us. Since pre season he has gradually looked like he has understood the role. And his movement off the ball has improved. If he can continue at this rate he will be a very useful option to rotate our wing backs when we have 3 games a week and give us a player who can beat players and be effective with it

I haven’t seen the Jonny chance again but it seemed like a great opportunity from a good cross? Couldn’t quite generate the power needed?

Imittially i thought VAR would overturn the pen.
However Pogba's right foot caught Coady therewas contact so it was a penalty

Traore's performance was good and I think made to look better because Doc was so poor. Nuno got that wrong, he clearly wasn't right after 10 minutes and should've been subbed. Bloody brave and not very Nuno to bring Traore on for Doc and he repaid that faith well. Because our wing backs are so important in knocked everybody else out of shape and means our game doesn't work and makes us vulnerable down the flanks. Utd's press would've been easily countered, as it was for large parts of the second half, if we had a functioning RWB. A good example of this is Bennett's frailties in possession is shown up badly without Doc and it was predictably his mistake that led to their goal, he's a head it and kick it CB and without support he is a bit of a liability.

I thought Coady had a stinker with the ball and he also panicked by booting the ball long to Harry Maguire too many times rather than finding a player, hopefully it's his one poor game for the season out of the way.

I do wonder if teams have worked out that we set out to contain in the first half and not concede and go out to press us, Leicester did it last week and Utd this week. I'd like to see Nuno change this every now and again just to keep the opposition off centre as when we click we purr and for 15-20 minutes of the second half we looked very good even if we did give the ball away a bit too much.

Utd were a different animal to last season and give Solskjaer his due he has shored up the pieces that needed it. Maguire and AWB make their defence far more solid and Pogba and McTominay look far better in CM than Fred and Matic. James looks a proper player and will be excellent as long as he cuts out the cheating (he should've been sent off for the hack on Jota).

I'm not disappointed with the draw but we have to follow this up with a good win against Burnley.

Jonny was my MotM. Never stopped running and would've been a great performance had he stuck that header away.

The header? Yeah I thought he had all the time in the world to set himself and find the far corner there tbf

He got plenty of power on it, just straight at the keeper unfortunately. At first I thought he should've tried to head it down to someone but don't think there was anyone really in enough space to try it and the way he was coming onto it really did lend itself to an attempt on goal, just lacked the accuracy it needed.

Neves goal could not have ruled oyt for offside.
The rule states a part of the body you can score with in an offside position.
You cant score with your arm so he was onside.
His feet were way on side as was the rest of his body

His shoulder was only just onside, as per the onscreen VAR graphics on Sky.

Poor effort really, he had ages to either pick a corner, bring it down or head it back to someone else but he just looped a header straight down De Gea’s throat.

Reading the match reports there is criticism of us for only two shots on target! Ffs! Happy for that critique to be levelled if we are playing an awful side who came to park a bus but we have, once again, taken points off a big six side deservedly so. I can't see how that's bad. If anything it shows consistency.
