Wolves 1-1 Aston Villa: Verdict Thread

Watching it back on MOTD2:

- First Lemina one isn't even a foul, got the ball
- Not enough for a pen on Neto for me
- They didn't show the Luiz/Hwang incident properly so still no real idea what happened or if there was a case for a red
- Definite pen for them and amazed it wasn't overturned, what the hell was Doherty thinking
On watching it last night I agree with your points, but lemina 2nd was definitely a booking, we'll have to put in the file with Jotas sending off last week and ask for a replay too.

Only thing I can say is he was consistently poor for both teams, fair enough I hold my hands up, but it was difficult match to ref. Perhaps some sort of Appeal system needs to be introduced for getting 2 bookings in a match, when 1 is definitely a error.

Not sure how kovacic and Guimierres(sp) managed to avoid 2nd yellows in their respective games either.

I had a family thing straight after the match, so late to this party.
I think the formation is probably the same help and hindrance it has always been since prime Nuno. Yes we look more secure in most defensive situations, but takes a creative player off the pitch when we have the ball. The way Villa played against us is more in keeping with how others will do at home than Man City, sit off and ask us to break them down. That's where I think we miss a more traditional 9 to play off and takes Cunha's strengths away as he needs to come from deeper in those games. We created little in that starting 343 other than relying on Neto's brilliance. Trying to pass out from the back using Sa, Toti and to a lesser degree Dawson isn't going to be productive and will cause more harm than good. Toti in particular isn't capable of a pass that's more than 5 yards and looks uncomfortable every time the ball is at his feet. Teams will notice that and look to take advantage.

Sasa is an interesting one, one lovely ball for Neto's miss and a couple of other nice lays offs, an awful shank when he should be hitting the target as an absolute minimum and to me looked like he's running in treacle. Having seen so little of him pre injury I'm not sure whether that's just what he is ot whether it's fitness related.

I'd have taken Fabio off and put Doyle on when Lemina was sent off, yes it's harsh on him, but it would have been the correct call tactically imo. We got through that last 10 mins by luck, it could have been managed better.

I said it about Luton the other night, but conceding after scoring is amateurish, particularly when it's not as a result of particularly good play. Don't know whether Lemina just let Torres go, or whether he thought he was passing him on to Semedo, but it was awful from one or other of them, more likely the former and self inflicted

Agree with all this (also DW) after watching motd.
With Sasa, I think it's a bit of both, doubt he'll ever be a pressing machine but it'll take a while to get him fully fit.
Didn't think it was a pen by Doc from the North Bank but plainly it was, why players insist on putting their hand in the back of an attacker I don't know, there wasn't much pressure but I'd have been screaming for it, Neto's would have been soft but in the 'seen them given' category.
Lemina's first yellow wasn't imo, the second very harsh, the ref let loads of those challenges go all game.
On the way home thought a draw was a fair result, turns out we were a bit on the lucky side, about fucking time.

This gets said a lot but I honestly don't see it.
Compare his touch to say Semedo. Semedo has the ball under control instantly most of the time. Same with Neto. Was the same with Mouts and Neves. Hwang is nowhere near any of these guys in skill level. The ball virtually always moves away from him a little bit. This gives the opponent the opportunity to nip in.

I'm seeing Hwang skipping away from players, making good decisions and knocking goals in like no one we've seen since peak Raul, even his goal yesterday was a far better finish than it looked. His touch looks fine to me.

The touch that matters when you are a forward, is the one that puts the ball in the back of the net and Hwang knows where the back of the net is.

In fact, i think all of his goals this season except Ipswich have been one touch finishes?

I've slaughtered Hwang in the past, and generally presumed that just can't count on pressing, scrappy goals and tap ins being your main strategy as a forward, but I think it's time to hold my hands up and say I was wrong; he's absolutely worth his place in the team and we'd be in the bottom three if we had Sarabia playing instead of him this season.

He's very, very capable of a terrible first touch/first time pass, but can also look really good on occassion - the turn he did in the second half was Nunes-esque, apart from the fact he actually passed it too a colleague. The Neto chance came directly from him winning the ball and then an intelligent pass to Sasa.

I'm converted, a fully fledged member of the Hwang Gang.

His first touch and some of his passes can be a bit scary, especially in our defensive 3rd, but his pace, strength, workrate and his goals (scrappy or not) make him one of the first names on the team sheet atm. Seems a nice guy too.

His goal yesterday came from him winning the ball in the left back area too.

I'm going to be watching that goal back again and again. How fucking good is Pedro Neto. He's unstoppable.
Yeah, an absolute bonus that he’s “back”.

Hwang is so weird. The goal scoring isn’t entirely sustainable imo BUT he’s well on course for over 10 goals which I could never have predicted!!

He's on course for 20+ which nobody could've predicted.

If you are a fan of these things his xg is 1.2, Cunha's 2. At least according to FotMob. Although that doesn't feel right as he's not scoring worldies

Hard fought win in a scrappy game littered with niggly fouls by both teams (how that snidey little shit McGinn got away with his constant wrestling with Dawson at corners is beyond me) and the trainers probably did the most running all afternoon. Great to see Neto and Hwang team up again to score another good goal. Neto could and should have scored too afterwards after a good ball from Sasa who looked good on his cameo unlike Silva who was gash.

Think both teams and fans are happy enough with a point, we could easily have won the game but then so could Villa who had their chances in the extended injury time including the final kick of the game.

Happy with 5 points from the last 3 considering 2 of the games were City and Villa, fair play to O'Neil who has made changes to his set-up and seems to be managing games better too, let's hope it continues. The key will be to see how we set up and perform against Bournemouth and Sheffield United

He’ll get 15-20 at this rate. He’s such an odd player who doesn’t necessarily have any stand out traits: he’s just a bit of a bog standard Prem player. But his knack for being in the right place at the right time is pretty unstoppable.

Clearly playing with a lot of confidence at the moment too. Hwang twelve months ago wouldn’t have buried that.

He’s like the Billing of Wolves.
