Wolves 1-0 Leeds: Verdict Thread

Yeah, I do that. It’s great for sciatica which I get for standing too long.

I already have plenty of those around.

Apparently he does that due to extreme pain in his back.
Completely understandable. When I had an excruciating spell of sciatica a few years back, the only real pain relief I could get was by squatting on my haunches. A great way to stretch the hamstrings.

I was quite fond of Carl Robinson tbh.

Relative to where we were - for the most part a nothing side under Mcghee and Lee - he was never going to amount to much but he worked hard and scored a few goals. He was Jack Price with the odd goal. A bit of a nothing player which was an improvement on the likes of Ferguson/Edwards.

Scored a brilliant goal the night Bully got his 300th v Bradford, Neves-esque if you like.

Fantastic result, decent performance. Our defending for set pieces is troubling and puzzling me. Even I can see exactly what's gonna happen before the ball's kicked. Our defenders occupying the central area, blindside of the Leeds targets, massed behind them. Thankfully, the Leeds efforts were straight at Rui but still had to be saved. That save from Costa at the death. However, we've been crying out for more attacking intent, especially in the first halves of games, and we finally got it. We arguably could have been 2 up, what with the Neto shot and Semedo chance. By the way, I thought Semedo was decent the whole game. Hopefully, he rams more of my recent criticism of him, down my big gob! Neto and Adama always looking dangerous, but also both guilty of giving the ball away a little too often (Neto one leading to their disallowed goal for offside). Suppose they're both forgiven for those misdemeanours, given what they bring to the table. Especially Adama last night. What a thunderbolt, deserving to win a game, even if it came of the keeper's arse! UTW!
P.S. Marcal

It's a lazy Sunday so I thought I'd go back and check - off the top of my head I have a feeling most of our set piece goals have come from direct balls into the box from Neto. What counts as a set piece is a bit debateable as I'm not sure when "phase of play" officially finishes, so I've just included what I'd think would count, could well be off on some of these

Sheff Utd away - Saiss header from Neto direct corner
Newcastle home - Jimenez ridiculous strike after direct Neto FK headed clear (edit - to say direct meaning straight delivery into the box, not shot on goal)
Chelsea home - Podence scores after a Neto short corner to Marcal, ball half-cleared and then a bit of a scramble in the box
Spurs home - Saiss header from Neto direct corner
Brighton away - Saiss header from Semedo cross after Moutinho direct corner not cleared
Everton home - Neves volley from Ait Nouri cross after Neto direct corner not cleared
West Brom home - Silva scores after Neto direct FK not cleared (again direct FK meaning straight delivery, not shot)
West Brom home - Boly scores after Moutinho direct FK not cleared

Think it's fair to say we're not doing ourselves favours with the constant short corners considering where most of our success is coming from

There's nothing wrong with short corners if executed correctly, the ones that end up a farce are embarrassing though, I think the issue is they are a being noticed as they are the 'hot topic', nobody notices the amount of direct corners that amount to nothing

V Leicester, bar 1, I thought our short corner routines were good. All had the defence scrambling to clear. The only one we got wrong was the pass back to Mout being too short and it was cleared.
We've started to mix our corners now which is better and our poor corners on Friday were ones we tried to put straight in.

I thought that, it just seemed de rigueur to berate the short corners

I'm not saying there's no place for them, incidentally. When done well they can be very effective - the semi-final against Watford's an easy example.

Just find it interesting that for the most part the end product hasn't really been there - mostly because execution has been really sloppy, IMO.

Considering it's usually our best on-ball players involved it's even weirder.

We seemed quite lucky at the end, with the promising attacks they managed, but I'm glad we managed to get that over the line.

Feels like we need to score more as most games have been pretty scrappy. Unfortunately, didn't manage to watch most of the game again due to work :(

There's no doubt we have had a bit of good luck last few games but I like to think we have earned that luck by the way we've played at times, its not been perfect and we still need to start scoring more goals but there are green shoots.......to quote that terrible old cliche (which may or may not be true)
'luck evens itself out over the season'

Well yeah, we've drawn or lost games that we should have got more from.

Newcastle, Leicester away, Southampton home, Villa, Spurs, United, Brighton, Everton, Albion. Not much of a stretch to make a claim that our performances merited more than four points out of that lot.

I think they're easy targets because so much of our forward play has been cautious and unconvincing this season.

At least regular corners usually find their way into the opposition box, an area we rarely venture into otherwise
