Burnley really could not have complained at a 6-0 defeat there, we absolutely mauled them. I'm struggling to think of a better performance in all my years watching them to be honest, some of the spankings we handed out in 87/88 were as near total domination as you could get but that was 4th tier opposition and not teams who'd just qualified for Europe. It's incomparable I suppose really but today's football was just magnificent to watch, Dyche's football was woeful and he had absolutely no answer to us. 30 shots at goal, 30. From a newly promoted team against last season's 7th placed team. That's fucking ludicrous and show what we're about.
Doherty had a very good game on the whole but his final ball was wank, the one good chance he had to to cross early in the second half he spannered out for a throw in, then worse still (and I really would have loved him to score it as the move was fucking brilliant) he missed a proper gilt-edged chance that he'd worked so hard to create. Easily the best game I've seen him have but we need better in that final third, he's never going to offer us what we need.
Our finishing was awful, Doherty was joined by Jimenez, Costa and Bonatini by spurning chances that should have least hit the target although they were of differing levels of difficulty, and Bonatini did himself no favours in a pretty awful cameo appearance. We really need to putting those chances away, scoring goals breed confidence and against better teams one probably won't be enough.
On the positive side, well, where do you start? Boly, Bennett, Coady, Jonny were outstanding, Doherty had his best game in a Wolves shirt which could have been even better, Neves is becoming the complete midfielder very quickly, Moutinho at £5m is the steal of the century, Jota and Costa are starting to come good with two top performances and Jimenez fits us like a glove. Then we have Traore in reserve who is looking very much like he's learning a lot very quickly and Dendoncker who can't even touch the first team squad yet (which is unbelievable in itself). Nuno is a genius and the players are feeding off that, it's amazing to watch.
The crowd were great again and things really are looking rosy, it comes to something when we're all in the mind that we'd be disappointed by a defeat at Old Trafford next week.
Great day, great game, great post-match drink.
