Wolves 1-0 Burnley: The 1-0 massacre Verdict Thread

There was a few times Doherty had so much space and wasted the opportunity to get the ball in but other times he put in some good balls, mixed but also got the assist. Good game from him on the whole.

Just bumped into a Cardiff fan as I was making my way home from the train. Struck me how lucky we are to be signing players like Moutinho and he was happy with Bobby Reid.....

Burnley really could not have complained at a 6-0 defeat there, we absolutely mauled them. I'm struggling to think of a better performance in all my years watching them to be honest, some of the spankings we handed out in 87/88 were as near total domination as you could get but that was 4th tier opposition and not teams who'd just qualified for Europe. It's incomparable I suppose really but today's football was just magnificent to watch, Dyche's football was woeful and he had absolutely no answer to us. 30 shots at goal, 30. From a newly promoted team against last season's 7th placed team. That's fucking ludicrous and show what we're about.

Doherty had a very good game on the whole but his final ball was wank, the one good chance he had to to cross early in the second half he spannered out for a throw in, then worse still (and I really would have loved him to score it as the move was fucking brilliant) he missed a proper gilt-edged chance that he'd worked so hard to create. Easily the best game I've seen him have but we need better in that final third, he's never going to offer us what we need.
Our finishing was awful, Doherty was joined by Jimenez, Costa and Bonatini by spurning chances that should have least hit the target although they were of differing levels of difficulty, and Bonatini did himself no favours in a pretty awful cameo appearance. We really need to putting those chances away, scoring goals breed confidence and against better teams one probably won't be enough.

On the positive side, well, where do you start? Boly, Bennett, Coady, Jonny were outstanding, Doherty had his best game in a Wolves shirt which could have been even better, Neves is becoming the complete midfielder very quickly, Moutinho at £5m is the steal of the century, Jota and Costa are starting to come good with two top performances and Jimenez fits us like a glove. Then we have Traore in reserve who is looking very much like he's learning a lot very quickly and Dendoncker who can't even touch the first team squad yet (which is unbelievable in itself). Nuno is a genius and the players are feeding off that, it's amazing to watch.
The crowd were great again and things really are looking rosy, it comes to something when we're all in the mind that we'd be disappointed by a defeat at Old Trafford next week.

Great day, great game, great post-match drink.

Sky Player ratings have Moutinho down as a 6/10 - If that was a 6/10 performance I am really looking forward to seeing him putting in an 8 or 9 out of 10. Fucking idiots

Sky showing the world how fucking clueless they are, he was immense.

Another good day out despite travel problems as the M4 was closed when I got there at 8.40am & had to take the 'scenic route' via Cirencester & Stroud then took me 15 mins to get out of the car park & another 30 to get back on the M5!

Really good performance apart from 1 glaring issue - Nuno will be having the attackers all out on a punishing training session as to how to kick the ball at the goal & not over the top or either side of it. Burnley only had one plan - kick it hard & high forward & hope.

All had good games (apart from Patricio, but thats only because he had nothing to do - though he did that adequately) just some better than others. Jonny much more prominent in attack than I have seen him in the other games & Helder was inspirational if we ignore the shooting (see earlier)

4 or 5 would not have flattered us, but ultimately 1 - 0 still gets you 3 points. We cannot be that profligate again though as it will come back to bite us at some point if we are.

It is clear though that we belong at this level.

Moutinho was MoTM for me - outshone Neves who was just a touch under his usual standard

Boly for me, he didn't put a foot wrong and was an absolute rock. Again. To be fair Lycan said outside Boho "Right the, MoTM?" and nobody could answer straight away, there were that many good performances. Boly though, absolutely outstanding.

Either of the wing backs could have been my MOTM really. Moutinho is a god though - BBC have him MOTM to be fair

Could have gone for Boly just as easily - one glorious pass which curved wickedly onto Doherty's foot in the second half

Not sure he quite meant that to happen that way though

Thought Neves played well tbh!

Moutinho is superb though, so calm and relaxed on the ball and he works hard too. However my motm is probably Boly, he was superb at the back today. Dealt with every long ball with consummate ease!

Going to be looking like a witch hunt here but I wouldn't have Doherty down for MoTM for the miss and poor cross mentioned earlier, but there was also one point on 45 minutes when he was clear on the right and played the ball back to Costa. Instead of attacking the acres of space he had to receive the ball back he stood there and ended up playing it back to Costa again which ran down the minute added on. Little things but you can see why MON said what he said about him and I was surprised when people questioned that to be honest.

Would admit that when I saw the tactics Burnley were going to use virtually all game I did have a little bit of concern as to whether Coady would get exposed to the high ball & physical presence, but reality was that they never had more than 2 players in that area & we had 3 CH's.

Boly & Bennett just snuffed them out all game. Whilst Bennett will not give you the attacking element as Boly does when he brings the ball out, he was impressive in covering the defensive role & Burnley got nothing out of him all afternoon. Played it simple & never gave the ball away

Honestly second half I thought he was superb in both aspects of the game. He played at least two more passes (wouldn’t call crosses) into the box to give player a good opportunities. He is getting better and better at underlapoing too which Jonny does really well. You can really see the developments to our attacking play as a team.

I think we know that Doherty doesn't have the pace or control to really attack space in front of him with the ball - did make some decent runs into space at times.

Would rather he did what he is capable of rather than trying things he can't really do & losing the ball. He had a more than decent game, but would not be my MoTM.

You could have picked any of five players in old gold for motm. No gripes it going to Doherty who, like Bennet, is holding his own so far in this league

I thought Doherty was fantastic. He's not a winger so he's not going to be as good as a winger would at finding passes/crosses in the final third, Jonny doesn't do it either sometimes and he's a fantastic footballer. Doc did get forward to great effect though and numerous times he was in such a good position he was the one intercepting and getting us on the attack. Hart made a good stop to deny him, he created the goal and it was his cross that lead to Jonny hitting his weak left footed effort towards goal. Yes there were a couple of poor crosses in there but that'g going to happen. Again it's the case where any bad is magnified because of peoples past thoughts on him. I would say he's looked more than good enough in his last 3 appearances.

Sky player ratings are voted in arent they, so not a true reflection on any performance. Idiots WBA, Villa fans easy voting 3 or 4 on Joao..
