I'm far from in "is Nuno a good manager or should he go" territory, but I've got to admit to starting to find it less incomprehensible that we bumble and bore a season away that Fosun decide to call time.
Upon his arrival we saw a fair few fans from his previous clubs say he starts like a train, but then gets in his own head, turns ultra defensive and things fizzle out. To his credit I think Nuno has even recognised that, hence the 'revolution', but it looks far more confused than it does considered, at the moment.
Since lockdown, we're definitely one of the most boring sides in the league to watch, and even though since the formation change the games are ostensibly more exciting, we're still creating fuck all, but instead look easier to get at.
The transfer strategy, the formation changes, the personnel changes...I don't know what it looks like, and I don't want to say panicked, but it certainly doesn't look structured or planned.
Nuno is unquestionably the best manager of my lifetime, and clearly these are the best times. In previous dips I've never doubted that he'll be able to get us out of it, but that clarity and belief is missing this time. Like I *still* think he will see us right - as well as desperately hoping he does, for both the club I love and a man that I have a huge amount of affection and respect for. But it just doesn't feel impossible to me that he won't get it right now. It looks like the problem could be one or all of:
we've lost two key players that wanted to go, can't be helped
We've lost two further key players to long term injury, can't be helped
Tactically, he either knows what he wants us to do but can't get us to do it; he doesn't know what he wants us to do; he knows what he wants us to do but hasn't got the players to do it but is trying anyway.
I'm sure I'll get all manner of pelters from people that will have read too much into that, but the direction of travel, the loss of identity, structure and consistency, and the formation/personnel changes are all difficult things to address whilst remaining competitive in a season. One thing I do criticise the club for is to attempt a revolution with no preseason with a squad and a manager who's success is built on drills, repetition and shape work on the training ground.
