Wolves 0-0 Brighton: Verdict Thread

I agree everyone who thinks we played well clearly wasn't there.

Because it's fairly obvious the divide is between fans who were at the game and those who weren't.
Regardless of whether this is true or not (and I have no idea if it is), it's no excuse to talk down to people.

I'm not dismissing anyone's opinion, I'm just saying those who were at the game tend to have a brighter look on things.

If that's a shithouse comment so be it. I reckon I'll survive.

Kiss goodbye to 7th place, lads.

Our inability to find a way to beat sides that just come and park the bus has cost us dearly. Go away, dust ourselves down, sign some more players - and learn a different way of playing against this type of side. Then go again next season.

Far too predictable today. Slow, too many sideways and safe passes. We’ve done the same all season bar one or two games (against sides outside of the top 6).

Very disappointing result and I’m still scratching my head how Vinagre doesn’t get a start today.

Second half we had more than enough chances to win the game. Breaking them down wasn’t the issue.

We havent any right to demand we beat who we want, that comes with staying in this league and continual recruitment. I can stay this time next year same scenario we will break teams down.

Yes we dominated possession but too often notably in the first half we played safe, trying to work an opening rather than creating one. Jota aside, nobody looked to get in behind either with runs off the ball nor passes down the outside of the centre halves. MGW was the most likely with some nice one touch stuff but he faded after ht. I think Nuno needs to reassess the way we set up for games like this and also consider some more ambitious formation changes. Against a side that for most of the game had Murray playing 10 yards inside our half we didn't need 3 at the back, it was pointless one of Coady or Bennett being on the pitch, that's not to criticise either of them individually they just weren't needed. Neves and Moutinho were too deep especially in the first half, one of them could and should have played 10 yards higher up the pitch, given Brighton's lack of intent it would have been risk free. Vinagre is raw, his distribution is often weak, but he puts the opposition on the back foot, won corners and ended up often being double marked. He should have started that's not revisionism, it's what most said in the pre match thread.

One of the problems we had was that on the left willy Boly could bring the ball forward and pass it forward, but Ryan Bennett can’t do that on the right. It made us lopsided, and even more so when Vinagre came on, all our good work came down the left - and until Traore came on, everything on our right went backwards or sideways.

We didn't look particularly balanced today. Often i think that is Nuno's preference - one side more conservative and one more attacking. Today we really didn't need to be defensive at all.

He may have thought it was necessary given the early goals we'd conceded recently.

Theres one thing that going to excite me this summer, Nuno knows where he needs to strengthen, and with how we've played and how strong we have been for a lot of the season, those reinforcements will now want to come to Wolves. Cant build a complete side in one season. Man City I suppose have only just done that domestically this season.

A lot of overreactions in this thread from what I can see.

Brighton came for the point and were never there for any more - they wasted time from the start. When they put 10 men behind the ball it can be hard to break a team down. Could we have done better? Yes, absolutely. Were we awful? Not at all. We had a few decent chances, hit the post and bar, Ryan made some solid saves, and Donck should score one of his chances. If he does then this thread would be totally different and we'd be talking about how well we controlled the game/breakthrough was inevitable/did well to keep Brighton at arm's length and so.

Thought MGW started bright but was poor come the second half. Jonny was more attacking than usual but it wasn't the right game for him, would have liked to see Vinagre start (and he was a real bright spark when he came on). Some of the link-up play was nice in the first half, just couldn't get that final ball right. Don't agree with the criticism of Neves - his passing was good and at no point were Brighton able to deal with his cross field passes. Doc got into a lot of good opportunities because of it but his crossing wasn't good enough. This was the sort of game where you'd like to have more players who can come off the bench and change the game, something I'm sure we will look to correct over the summer.

Disappointing result but sometimes breaking through busparkers can be a challenge. In hinsight we should have probably started with a similar team to Cardiff and got at them as we knew Brighton would sit deep, but we didn't, oh well. We're still just a point off 7th, roll on Wednesday.

A bit off the wall but I wanted Johnny to play right side centre back and vinagre left wing back. Harsh on Bennett but we all pretty much guessed how they would set up. Johnny can then bring the ball forward like Boly and covers Doc. I know he is short but at home against this type of team that is an option for me.

+1

Plus we need to stop Neves coming back playing CB. He’s basically standing next to Coady and doing his job for him. Boly goes LB, Bennett RB and then those stand next to each other. Allow Coady to hit the diagonal or ball into feet. We know he’s capable. And then Neves can work an angle further forward making Coadys job of starting the attack easier.

We had enough chances to win, but we also didn’t turn the screw as much as we could have done.

I’m sure both the tactical deficiencies and the the personnel will be altered over the summer to rectify these issue.

The transfer window is going to be stupidly exciting, I don't think there's any doubt.

Time wasting was bloody annoying today. Second half we had our chances but it wasn't to be. If you were in the North bank, how hot was that. I'm bloody sunburnt.

The Leaping Wolf, some characters in there pre match :icon_lol:

Someone else suggested the Otto to RCB switch before for games like this and I think its a great idea, Boly and Otto roaming forward with Vinny and Doc overlapping would be much more creative. It is fine margins and if Jotas header goes and or the Donck smashes in the rebound then we would all be a little bit more satisfied.

I think there are options in our current squad to improve the lineup for games like this but I am sure we will bring in a different style of CM in the summer and another striker maybe with different characteristics to Raul. Either way I am sure we will improve and if our greatest worry this season is not smashing the bottom sides I will gladly take that as a mark of significant progress.

Come on uncle Jorge go get that Mr Felix he looks quite tasty!

It’s been more than a decent season. Come on.

0-1 vs Brighton (a)
0-2 vs Hudds’ (h)
1-2 vs Cardiff (a)
1-1 vs Fulham (a)
0-2 vs Palace (h)
1-1 vs Newc’ (h)
0-1 vs Hudds’ (a)
0-2 vs Burnley (a)
1-3 vs Saints (a)
0-0 vs Brighton (h)

I think “decent” is more than fair when you consider the results above. I wouldn’t read too much in to my comments earlier in the thread. I’ve said it 100 times - this season has had some massive highs, and some disappointing off days (see above). But we’re newly promoted and are going to be inconsistent, just like most of the sides outside of the top 6.

I think it’s also fair to look at the results and performances above and to reflect on what might have been, had we turned even 3-4 of those in to wins. Ultimately, it’s an area Nuno & co will be looking to improve on next season and I have total faith that he’ll do that, because it’s not a given that we will take as many points off the big boys next season.

There are some posters on here who embarrass themselves falling over to complain whenever someone dares to critique the side (which they’re entitled to do). I’ve been to plenty of games this season and will comment as I see fit whether I’ve been in the ground or not. Throwing in comments such as “armchair fan” and suggesting those who go every week are somehow superior than those that don’t, is far worse than any comment I’ve read that happen to be slightly critical of the performance.

Each to their own, though.

I completely agree with all of this. Well said Jinky.
