Winter Improvement Thread (aka Winter Squad Weakening Thread and TWF Suicide Watch)

We are miles off challenging for the top six! Absolutely nowhere near.

We spent ages not actually being in the bottom three in 2011/12 but we were quite patently a relegation team.

Agreed so surely you improve the squad with a view to making that challenge given you have 10 million in the bank? Or you right of the season and communicate that to supporter's. The latter requires far more stability and bottle than our current leader's possess. The current bollocks helps no one

Did I miss the news whereby Steve Gibson has put Boro up for sale? If not then there is just no comaparison to be made

if only it were that simple. I mean if based on income and costs the club is scheduled to lose money next year then, as others have said, the money in the bank may be left there to cover that loss, especially n a scenario where zero money is intended to come in from the existing owner.

and in any transfer market there's a case of not spending for spending's sake but for getting value for money.

I don't think this is a situation any fan would wish for, it's just the way it is at the moment. I'd agree there could be a bit more transparency, but I don't think you need to be a genius to work it out.

We aren't going up this season no matter what you do.

Banking the money for the summer is fine if you think that it will actually be spent then. Personally I very much doubt it, given what the club say as opposed to actually do over the last few years.
And if we need the Afobe money to break even next season then we are fucked, because we're not going to find a £10 million player very often. So if that's the case what happens in 2017-18? Promotion next year looks almost as unlikely as this without a takeover.
I love this club but am becoming disillusioned with those running it and find it hard to believe anything they say.

Or we sign three players adding strength play better finish ninth, fans see the second half of the season as positive, renew their tickets for 2017, giving the club look an even better gloss for anew owner.Win - win

You thought about playing Football Manager? Sounds right up your street.

I think a positive end of the season is all we can hope for, something that is fun again to watch. All that seems to come out of Wolves at the moment is very negative be it injuries or just the total lack of direction anyone seems to have in charge of the club. I just want something to convince me getting a new season ticket isn't going to be another season of lies and weakening of the first team.

We give the full amount of money we got for Afobe to Jackett. For arguments sake we will say £8m. Would you honestly trust KJ with that kind of money?

Where are Ipswich in the league right now? How much has McCarthy spent there throughout the last 3 or 4 years? Despite losing Mings who cost similar money to Afobe? How much has Gary Rowett spent in the last 14 months or so?

I am absolutely sick to death of hearing people going on about money. It is not the be all and end all.

Good managers work with the budgets in which they are given. George Saville, Leon Clarke, Conor Coady, Jed Wallace, Nathan Byrne.. are they noticeable improvements? How much is all that if you tot it up?

A good manager makes good use of that kind of money, KJ does not. And as for Thelwell, do not even get me started.

Yep, would rather give MM £5m than give KJ £15m

Anyway, Twitter reporting that we have made a bid for Libor Kozak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libor_Kozák Not to be confused with Libor Rate or Libor Scandal. And - this will get you excited - Aaron Collins, an 18 year old from Newport County

I doubt we have made a bid for Kozak, he has just got back into there side and by all accounts is an important player for them now.

About 5 million. We all went wtf with Clarke. Coady started well. Wallace was a signing that received positive responses. There is a clamour for Byrne to get more game time. We haven't even brought in free transfers. We have areas that are under strength. It does not need a genius to work out that fresh faces are still needed given us keeping kj. I would be happy if 3 freebies had the quality to fill the gaps but freebies tend to want higher wages and the club do not seem prepared to breach the wage structure in the current limbo. That leaves us apparently unwilling to pay transfer fees at an inflated time and unwilling to pay wages to tempt freebies. Not a hopeful or helpful position

Johnny has a point with the parachute payments.

Our wage bill must be very low. Half the players are young academy players who aren't going to be on but wages at all, the others are young players from elsewhere, and then a few players signed whilst in L1. We literally don't have any big name players anymore.

There's no way a club like wolves (still bringing in 20k a week, not brilliant but better than most) with tiny wage bill is needing to sell Afobe to break even. We should be making a huge profit. Especially as the big cash loss from releasing the big salaries was dealt with in the past.

I don't do pointless video games sorry. I prefer reality. Wolves win plenty of games on FIFA 16 but that doesn't help them on matchdays

Any particular reason why not? As they are signings however you want to put it.

Saying that, nobody took you up on the offer because hardly anyone seems to be expecting much to happen. Most of the posts are discussing this and that nonsensical rumour.

Absolutely no chance.

We said that in 12/13 didn't we.Someone then stuck money on it and cashed in. We had 32 points from 27 games then. 5 points better off now but we were relegated by 4 points so............... I hope you're right.

We won 4 on the bounce playing well once.I would be surprised if the current squad did that again this season. We still need at least 17 points.
