Got to admit I wouldn't normally be enthused about paying €18M for a nearly 28 year old defender who has never played at a level higher than mid table Ligue 1, who I'd never heard of before and seemingly comes with almost no hype or competition for his signature. Unfortunately, considering the situation we have at the back where we have 3 positions to fill and can only usually count on 1 of the current options being vaguely up to standard in any particular game then this was probably the type of signing which needed to be made.
I think long term we've probably overpaid and I'd expect him to have the same kind of middling impact that signings like Jean Ricner Bellegarde have had. In the short term, I think it was laid bare against Forest that we lack pace and physicality across the back line so he will clearly improve us in that regard. If he can do things like actually contest a lofted ball over the top rather than just sticking his hand up and jogging back, actually try to head the round white thing away from our goal when the opposition kick it into our box from a set piece and try not to score too many own goals then that would be good too.
Hopefully it's not the end of our business in this area and this is the start of an overhaul of that position rather than being seen as the solution to all our problems. Regardless of what Hobbs & O'Neil thought, four CBs for two positions was never going to be enough, we now have an extra space to fill and there are huge question marks over the original 4 centre halves to say the least.
