The Summer 2025 Transfer Window Thread

I took it to mean as he wants a footballer there, rather than a head it kick it type; somebody not afraid to progress the play, and Doc is very good at that, but you do miss a bit of solidity and proactive defending. I don't think it needs to be a career fullback

If Danso had signed he'd be playing and Doherty wouldn't. The full back thing is such a red herring.

Especially as Toti is a fullback too.

No one's written off Djiga for ever, but it's definitely a shit signing as it stands as we made it in a relegation prevention window and he's not contributed anything for whatever reason

He'd have got more minutes had we been struggling, as Doc would have made mistakes and he would have come into the team.

His presence may well have pressed players to perform better.

How is it? He's played a full back every game in the league and has talked about that's how he wants to play multiple times.
Because he thinks Doherty is his best option, irrespective of where he's spent the majority of his career. Del summed it up well. If we'd spend £20m on Danso then he, Agbadou and Toti would the back 3, none of whom are full backs first and foremost

You've got absolutely nothing to base that on though. Vítor has talked at length about how and why he wants one of the back 3 to be a full back and has then proceeded to play a full back as part of the back 3 for almost every minute that he's been here.

Why did we spend £10m on a straight CB then in January when we already have Agbadou, Toti and Santi (and Dawson actually), with Mosquera to come back?

Either Djiga is taking a long time to acclimatise or he's no better than what we already have, which makes him a CB Sam Johnstone

I think "Del summed it up well" is all you need tbh

I don't think saying that the player we spent all January chasing would be in the side if signed is much of a stretch. Neither is playing the guy who has been the best centre half we've had for at least 4 years or the only one who looks comfortable on the left.

Well we don't have Dawson do we, the last we heard we were going to cancel his contract.

So 4 centre halves for 2 spots which is a good amount, hopefully if/when Mosquera comes back that means we can get rid of Bueno (or loan Djiga out if we feel like he needs more game time to develop).

So who plays RCB if Doc loses form/is injured?

I'd hope we wouldn't be loaning out someone we spent £10m on in the first few months of them being here

It depends how he views Toti doesn't it. If he doesn't see him as a full back then Danso would've been competing with Agba, Toti & Bueno for the 2 CB spots the same way Djiga is now. If he thinks Toti can give him what he wants from the full back in the back 3 then he might've played Danso - Agba - Toti.

Either way, the fact that he's played a full back there for almost every minute and has spoken about how & why he wants to play a full back as part of a back 3 suggests to me that he might just want a full back to play in a back 3.

Ah so in that very plausible scenario he thinks of Toti as a full back, but at the moment he isn't as you've said Djiga isn't competing with Doherty as a full back needs to play? It's flexible logic to try and explain something which isn't true and was only said to protect Dawson and Bueno when Doherty was originally selected ahead of them.

In terms of appraising the Djiga signing, it still begs the question; why not just sign someone in January who can play that RFBCB role (when we only have 33 year old 'never been a CB before' Doc there) rather than another CB to compete with the other 3 fit ones we already have

Could it also possibly be that VP thinks Doherty is doing fine right now and Djiga is a 21 year old kid who he doesn’t want to throw into a relegation fight in a new league/new country straight away?

Djiga is 22, also he has 111 senior apps in four different countries (not including England)

And if he isn't ready for a relegation fight this season then don't splash £10m on him in January. Reappraise in the summer when we know where we stand and what the market has to offer

In this speculation fest, what if Pereira thought Djiga was a bargain and he could get him get ready for next season, while Doc was doing a good enough job for the rest of this season.

Flexible logic is rich. What more evidence do you need if someone tells you they're going to do something a certain way and then proceeds to do exactly that.

You really think that when asked about tactics he said that to protect Santi Bueno's feelings?
