Luthor Burell needs a performance tonight if he wants to make the cut.

First half we were really rusty, and gave away too many penalties. The French possession was excellent and their pressure eventually led to a try.

The introduction of Cipriano, Danny Care and Jamie George brought some much needed energy to England and the last 5 minutes or so of play saw England almost snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, but it was all a bit too late.

The French looked less chaotic and will surely be a threat to anyone in the World Cup.

England really need to tighten up that discipline. Both Australia and Wales have kickers that will punish such indiscretions. However, Robshaw and Lancaster are well aware of that.

He says whilst hoping they are unable to sort it....

Of course. I hope England get pinged off the park against Wales, sort their discipline perfectly, and then have a super clean game against the Australians.

It's a shame for Cipriani but we don't seem particularly minded to play him at centre, even off the bench, and Farrell was always likely to get the nod as the spare 10.

Not sold on Burgess as yet but then we're only losing Burrell who hasn't done anything for a while, so the gamble's probably worth it there.

Agreed and with Slade in there who can cover 10 also you don't really need Cipriani.

I'm a big Burgess fan so I just hope he keeps progressing but he has obviously done well in camp over the summer.

Lancaster has picked specialists rather than Jack-of-all-trades like Cipriani and Easter.

Easter does little apart from No. 8 - hardly played at lock - he will have been overlooked as he is nowhere near as dynamic as Morgan.

What is Burgess a specialist at? Flanker? Centre? League?

I'm glad Ben Morgan has been selected. Up until his injury he was playing really well and did a lot of damage to the Aussies in the QBs.

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek about the 'specialists' as this is how Lancaster explained he had made the decisions on some players not/being included in the squad. He was obviously referring to Cipriani IMO, but didn't name him.

Be nice to have a specialist centre like Burrell in there!

I like Lancaster, but think he has done himself no favours overlooking Armitage and Abendanon too.

I wouldn't have objected to Burrell being in the squad. His experience would have been useful and he knows how to score tries.
It must have been a very tight decision to leave him out and keep Burgess.

It's difficult to criticise Lancaster as we haven't played any games yet, time will tell, and we all have our own favourites. E.g.I can't see how he could exclude Cipriani and yet pick May, who in my opinion is suspect under the high ball and can't tackle.

The decision over the foreign based players has been in place for a while, and like it or not, those affected by it know what they must do if they wish to be considered for England. Yes, IMO, Lancaster has made a rod for his own back, esp. with Armitage, but he has been consistent over it.
The same with the ill discipline cases of Hartley and Tuilagi. He has been consistent over his decision, whether anyone likes it or not.

All we can hope for now is that Lancaster and his team can get the best out of this squad and put some top class performances on the field. If we do that, who knows how far we can go, and I shall be behind the lads 100% whoever he picks.

Hmmm - Wales and Ireland put out first strings in Dublin and Wales win. Lovely.
