The Rugby Thread

We (and I mean me and you too) have got into the habit of blaming Eddie Jones for everything. I’d say some part is latent xenophobia but ultimately he has never played for England. Rugby is about the players on the pitch.
I don't think it's xenophobia ( not for me or you anyway) don't think anyone cares what the coaches nationality is any more do they?
I'm certainly not putting all the blame at Eddie's door, he started well, it definitely started before he arrived, we've just been too slow to change things and histenure was part of that.
Think all my posts during the game were mostly critical of the players.

I’m not sure what you change right now - ostensibly that was our best pack and they were totally owned. French weren’t much bigger but they played with much more confidence and intelligence. I don’t think that is on the coach - I certainly didn’t see a performance that bad under Jones. He’d run his time but I suspect all the journalists who were blaming him will be very quiet tomorrow.

It’s always Jones’s fault. People will still be pointing at him in 10 years time.
Rightly too - over coached and seemed to remove their ability to use their instincts and play what is in front of them.

Put this on the Rugby thread, rather than starting a whole new thread.
Betting on six nations today:
Intending to back Scots, Irish and French in an accumulator (odds are shockingly short obvs).
Nevertheless went to place bet on my Betfair account via the app.
I have a question regarding ACCA Edge which states; If One Leg Lets You Down - Get Your Stake Back'.
That seems straightforward enough on the face of it, but it also says T&C's apply.
Thought I'd click on the T&C's link.
Unsurprisingly I can't see anything to relating to 'ACCA Edge'.
Anyone know if there's a catch to it?

It would usually be “stake back as a free bet”, not your money back

The odds are so short I’ve backed the other results today with a handicap. Wales + 20 and England + 16
Double the odds of Irish and French wins with no handicap. Is it likely, no, but only value I could see.

I think we will let you down. If we get within 20 of France that’s wedding feast at Cana levels of miracle

I did a double in the end Scots and Irish. Couldn't even get a bet on France, it went to 1/25 and then suspended 😀

Say the odds didn't reach the minimum threshold in the t&c .
Normally states something like 2/1 or 3/1 for the account edge to kick in

Anybody who’s played any rugby knows his movement is caused the Irish knock. To say no mitigation is rubbish and watching it in super slow mo too.
Call it protocols but England have been punished for an Irish mistake.

Shocking decision, one of those where slo mo has made it look far worse than it is.
Not even a yellow.

challenging to see how England might have got anything today with this officiating.

England much better today, especially second half after going downtown 14.

Really impressive start to the second half from England before the inevitable.
If that's the best team in the World, then it should be a very open World Cup.

Sorry but in that clip the England forward simply shouldn’t be there. I do think international rugby is getting badly marred by red cards being thrown around like confetti though.

It'll be interesting to see where the game goes. The red cards won't stop until the head collisions stop, but head collisions happen all the time. The difference is that until around 2008, players were all sorts of different sizes, and the average collision happened with significantly lower force than the average today.

It's no coincidence in my view that it's players of the generation of Steve Thompson, Ryan Jones, and Alix Popham who have started suffering from brain injuries: they played during that period when the average size of a player just got bigger and bigger over just a few years.

The Lions coaches in 2013 could not believe how much bigger the players had become compared with the tour in 2009.

The game is all about winning collisions, but our skulls, shoulder joints etc just aren't designed to take such big hits. Jonny Wilkinson was one of the best tackling backs of his generation, but he has ruined both of his shoulders for life, and it's no surprise when you see how much bigger the average centre was by the time he retired compared with those that ran at him in the late 90s / early 00s.

I don't know what the answer is, but I'm worried that Thompson, Jones and Popham are just the beginning of high profile, long term cases of brain damage.
