The Road to World Cup 2026 and UEFA Nations League

The moment Klopp took something else and Pep indicated he wasn't interested just at the moment it was absolutely the best appointment the FA could make.

In international football Tuchel will look like a managerial giant in a field of pygmies. If he pisses the press off, more the fucking better. He will probably win shit. The player pool for England at the moment is pretty excellent, and the last couple of matches have shown Carsley clearly didn't know how to get the best out of them. I fully expect Tuchel to do that immediately.

Carsley will remain in charge for the 2 games in November

Why, what's the point? I can only assume he has a very specific World Cup contract

Interesting that Tuchel signed his contract last Tuesday, so Carsley will have known he wasn't getting the job when he picked that rogue formation against Greece, which seems even stranger now.
I can't imagine he picked a team he didn't care about.

No, I'm not suggesting sabotage, just that at the time I thought it was an attempt to prove he could get so many attacking players on the pitch and get a tune out of them. A job interview which backfired, when that now wasn't the case. He's tainted his reputation unnecessarily.

Hasn't he gone back to the Under-21s for January with (presumably) the FA's and Tuchel's blessing?

So I guess it hasn't done him too much immediate damage, especially as he has shown no sign of wanting a big club job?

What will be interesting is how he lines up England in the matches between now and Tuchel's arrival. I suspect there will be plenty of Tuchel influence. Might even see 3 at the back!

Pretty pathetic stuff from some outlets, xenophobic racist drivel. I'm seeing the same from some fans. English attitude to Germany is so small-time, they don't even consider us rivals.

One of Southgate's biggest successes was getting the media on side and generating a mostly positive atmosphere about England. That started to fade for Euro 2024 but it's a solid foundation. Tuchel does need to start well or they're going to going for him.

Given the loss against Greece I'm quite doubtful that England will win their Nations League group - need to win by 2 goals in Athens - which means a challenging qualifying group for the World Cup. TT makes a really good point about Carsley's selection for the Greece game - absolutely nonsensical and you can't even excuse it as a gamble to get the job.

There was a Londoner on the radio this morning ranting that he is done with England, he has England trackies for him and his kids that he worked 16 hour days to buy that are now in the bin, said he wouldn't watch a single game with a German/forruner in charge

Talk sport by any chance?

Bet he put an RIP Sven post on his Facebook as well

Germany certainly see the Dutch as the really big rival that is mutual hate. They also have a big rivalry with Italy. England are somewhat second division in their choice of huge rivals.

Thing is, English managers aren't great are they compared to their foreign counterparts. Looking at the Premier League Howe is the best of the bunch in 7th and before he got the Newcastle job I don't think anyone would have entertained the idea of him in charge of England. After Howe its a big drop to Dyche in 16th, Martin in 19th and O'Neil rock bottom. This is a major flaw in Hobbs 'buy British' approach with Wolves. Foreign coaches just seem to have far more about them

It doesn't help that every time a British manager in the past decade gets a shot at a Sky 6 job it ends badly and normally quickly
Moyes- Utd
Lampard twice and Potter at Chelsea
Rodgers - Liverpool
Not at that level, but Gerrard at Villa

Personally I think the same rule should apply to managers as players, but as they don't then it makes sense to go the best available route.

I repeat what I've said previously though, of the Top 5 European nations we are the only one who has appointed a none native coach and we've done it 3 times, that we don't have an obvious credible option is damning, particularly a decade post the launch of SGP.

Hodgson at Liverpool as well don't forget.

My God, they were awful when he was in charge by their usual standards.

Maybe Belgium and Portugal are the closest to the top 5 to have done it with both employing Martinez and Belgium now having Tedesco. Can't think of any top notch Belgian head coaches but Portugal have a fair bit of talent there but maybe they prefer to be employed in club management

It is interesting Spain is a bastion of great coaching, but plenty of foreign coaches have been in charge at Real, Barcelona, and Atleti.
I think non-Italian coaches are less common for the Italian giants of AC, Inter and Juventus?
