The hardest act to follow will be getting the kind of draws Southgate got!I'd prefer if the manager was English but cant think of one I'd give the job to .
Tuchel speaks good English I think that is important and should be a consideration
Capello didn't.
Tuchel must do better than Southgate though. Not an easy act to follow tournament-wise.
NoDid Capello and Sven get the same outrage?
The racists were more contained when they got the gig.
Indeed. The racists were more contained when they got the gig.
Keep winning and you get the benefits of seeding. The hardest act to follow will be getting the kind of draws Southgate got!
Was he? I was under the impression that things were looking quite good until he randomly lost his mind just prior to SA.Eriksson was 'ok'. Capello was a joke.
I’ve had this thought, too.Dunno if it makes me xenophobic, jingoistic, racist or a gammon but I find it a bit odd that the manager/coach of a national team team in international competitions can be 'foreign'. Personally I don't care what nationality they are but why not go the whole hog and sign players from another country? Surely the coach is part of the squad?
There was a backlash re Sven being the first. The media constantly went for him with his personal life - he gave them a lot to go at, and eventually brought him down with a Fake Sheikh hit. Social media was different then and Brexit was still contained to the left and right wing loons.Did Capello and Sven get the same outrage?
Goes back to what I said yesterday, the other major nations just don't do it.That said, I read a stat that suggested there hasn’t been a foreign manager win a World Cup. And in the euros only Greece have had a foreign manager and win it?
Yeah, I guess they just don’t need to. In an ideal world we wouldn’t either. I mean when Southgate resigned I was happy for Potter to be the replacement but it sums up the issue if he (or Carsley) are the best options. So although we got close with Southgate we have to decide if we seriously want to win. Because tuchel is genuinely the best option we had imo.Goes back to what I said yesterday, the other major nations just don't do it.
That's good insight YW from someone in that field.Yeah, I guess they just don’t need to. In an ideal world we wouldn’t either. It’s hard to pin the lack of quality English coaches down. I think at the top the lack of opportunity, with all the money and the lack of time anyone gets is harmful.
Equally, coaching just isn’t taken that seriously as a job in this country. EPPP has helped but there are still not that many full time coaches in academies, so for the majority it’s a second job. At one point I was juggling a full time job with a 20 hour contract at my club ouch was a bit ridiculous. I then had to go down to less money to be in a full time coaching role (which I’m grateful for). At a lot of clubs below the Category 1s (and even on some of those clubs) the pay is rubbish. That is also leading a lot of coaches to start their own private coaching businesses where they can earn loads more and take more of a recruitment role with professional clubs.
Even recently loads of coaches in premier league/championship academies have just gone to work for Saudi academies. Plenty go to work in America too
