The Road to Russia 2018

Southgate out.

Seriously - why? Southgate demonstrating why he doesn't want the job?

I'd genuinely prefer Gary Neville to come out of retirement.

I'd love him to explain how Johnson is better than say, Joel Ward. As you say, Walker is going to play anyway so why have you called up a bloke with zero future as cover? Give someone else a go and allow them experience of being around the camp if nothing else.

Joel Ward, Keiran Trippier even Danny fucking Simpson are better than the pile of shite that is Glenn fucking Johnson. If you don't want the job Gareth kindly fuck off and let somebody else have a go.

I really didn't think we could go much lower.

I'd prefer Neville to come out of retirement and take Johnson's place and manage the squad at the same time.

There you go, 10 right backs who could reasonably qualify as specialists in that position (they have all played extensively there at points in their careers, so I'm not counting someone like James Tomkins who is clearly a centre half by trade or a utility player such as Ashley Young), all playing in the Premier League if we really must restrict our thinking to that level, all bar Trippier have played at least as much football as Johnson this season (so not including someone on the absolute fringes as Jon Flanagan currently is at Burnley or Timothy Fosu-Mensah is at United), all fit and available (so not including injured players such as Sam Byram), took zero effort to knock up that list and they're all better options for this squad on numerous levels than Glen Johnson is. How in the living hell is Gareth Southgate - who is clearly highly thought of within the FA for whatever reason - making an error on that scale when all he has to do primarily day to day is watch English qualified players? It's unreal stuff.

Sterling out injured. Andros Townsend called up.

Johnson does the right thing and withdraws from the squad.

Michael Keane called up. He's impressed me for Burnley.

Good to see a player picked based on merit and not reputation or the club he plays for.

Southgate now wants the job and is ready.
Some on the bbc called his press conference statesmanlike.
Nonsense.

Sig starting tonight for Iceland! Bod listed amongst the subs.

Saunders' earning his corn tonight with his usual car crash punditry, "they better watch out , because we've got a team full of athletes and Gareth Bale".

Wales lead via a Joe Allen goal

Brilliant strike, wrong foot as well

2-1 Wales, fortunate with an OG. Hard on Austria who've been well on top.

2-2 Arny after Wales needlessly give the ball away

Austria look the better side here, and quite comfortably so. I'll take a point now.
