The Road To Germany 2024

Didn't watch it, so can't comment on the performance, in the context of qualification it's a decent point. Southgate once and for all loses his right to say players are picked on merit though

Maddison was crap just moaned at the ref gave the ball away and forgot basic control of a ball when 1 on 1.
Fully expect Scotland to turn us over on Tuesday, not because they’re a better side just more motivated for this fixture and probably have a better coach tactically.

Italy fucked up against Macedonia.

Not qualification but Germany got gubbed 4-1 at home to Japan, they are awful at the moment.

What makes a side better than another?

It's a pointless friendly, we'll go through the motions, they'll try, we'll probably still win as fundamentally our players are better. Either way it makes little difference and nobody really cares bar the odd jingoistic pillock

Players do as they are the only ones who can directly change a game.
It’s a one way rivalry and as it’s a friendly has zero meaning going forward.

Sounds boring.

Sounds boring.
It’s a game that both sets of players could do without, managers of everyone involved won’t be best pleased with this fixture either.
As an England fan it has zero redeeming features as a fixture just full of pre match and post match BS regardless of the result.

It isn't a one way rivalry at all. There is no way any English fan wants to lose to the Scots.
Of course no one wants to lose but the angst in the fixture is very one way. Only have to look at how fans travel to this game in its history prior to segregation in the 80’s next no English fans went to Hampden whilst Wembley probably was at least 2/3 Scottish.

To paint it as nobody cares is incorrect. Euro 96 was vociferously contested and fans were definitely bothered and not just because of the situation.

There's a very real rivalry, you may not think so on a personal level but it is definitely there in the media and travelling England fans.

Euro 96 was a competitive fixture so brings different meaning to the game. Clearly remember thinking after we’d beaten Scotland that I was more happy with the fact we were virtually through as opposed to getting one over Scotland.
Lived in Scotland for 4 years so know the rivalry better than most.
Friendly games bring a different meaning and heavily reduces rivalries especially from an England view point. Do I want us to lose? No if we do will I get stick? A bit but come next Saturday it’s old news.

Italy drawing with N Macedonia means the absolute maximum England need from their last 3 games is 4 points. That includes games v Malta & N Macedonia.

England and Scotland are both already there effectively.

Scotland are going in to next week with great form. It might be an interesting match

Most? Who are most?

As for the rest that's just your personal point of view.

Very meh performance from England. We dominated the first 10-15 minutes completely and suffocated Ukraine at first but they did grow into the game. Once we lost that front foot we never got it back, at least to me Ukraine always seemed more dangerous than England. Part of that is the nature of qualification of course, Ukraine had to get something and we did not. If Mudryk was anywhere decent they might have punished us at least once, he wasted multiple chances through sheer ineptitude, Walker covered him very very easily.

Maddison was poor and Henderson was shit, really shit. Putting in those performances and playing in Saudi should have him nowhere near the squad. Accomodating him put the team off balance as it pushed Maddison further forwards, I would drop Henderson now. Bellingham and Chilwell also have no connection at all, must have fucked up at least a dozen basic passes - neither seems to understand the other.

Overall an average performance and a point away to a challenging (ish) opponent isn't too bad. 'Home' crowd were in good voice in Wroclaw which made it more difficult. Qualification for Euros is stupidly easy but with Italy drawing it's done. In that second half Southgate clearly thought playing for the point was better than risking the win, England were very unambitious. Kane remains frustratingly deep but he can create, the ball for the equaliser was superb.

In the grand scheme this result doesn't matter too much, I would still fancy us to challenge in Germany.

Scotland is going to be difficult, and while they definitely care much more than we do about winning it remains a rivalry. They've given us a pretty small away allocation and fancy their chances of finally beating us for the first time in ages I think!

A lot of nations you’d have classed as minnows a few years back still with a chance of qualifying. Kazakhstan, Luxembourg and Armenia to mention. They probably won’t make it but have definitely moved away from the days of being whipping boys.

Kazakhstan a country I’ve spent a lot of time in could just do it.
It’s blatantly not in Europe but always enjoyed my time there people are fantastic and very welcoming and generous do for them I’d be delighted.
