Absolutely, beat a more then decent Dutch side in the final. That game against Peru it wasn't as if they had got themselves into trouble, thanks to the stupid second stage group system thy had drawn with Brazil and both had beaten Poland by 2 goals so it came down to who could beat the group whipping boys a badly outclassed Peru (who got to that stage by Scotland well being Scotland at a world cup) by the most, Brazil beat them 3-0 in the first game so Argentina had the advantage of knowing what they had to do, yes the keeper was Argentinian born but momentum and the crowd behind them they were always never going to be far away.Sorry mate, can’t be having that. Argentina ‘78 had a fantastic side. Kempes, Luque, Passarella and Ardiles just for starters. They took the game to a brilliant Dutch side in the final and beat them fair and square.
There was a very difficult political backdrop to the tournament and no doubt some dodgy dealings going on without which they may have never won the tournament, but I guess we’ll never know for sure. They were certainly one of the most entertaining to have won it although granted that doesn’t automatically exclude them from being the poorest.
Not sure if many remember but they even had defender Alberto Tarantini who miraculously signed for Birmingham. Now he was…. shit.
