The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Walker, Stones, Foden aren't peripheral really.

I take your point re KdB but Liverpool are definitely a sum of their parts. Alisson, VVD, Fabinho, Salah, Mane, Firmino, TAA, Robertson all key to their success
They aren’t key though. Stones isn’t first choice. Walker been injured and they can just play a CB there like it doesn’t matter. Foden hasn’t been starting of late.

TAA and Foden are probably the most key and one doesn’t get a game and the other wouldn’t be in the squad without injuries.

On a completely seperate note there is a lot more depth to England now. In the golden years you’ve got Ashley Cole and Gary Neville. Or Beckham and Owen. We had Darius Vassell, Keiron Dyer, Trevor Sinclair.

Now we’ve got a ton of FBs and a ton of Forwards

I think we may be on about different things.

I'm saying everybody is more important in a team function whereas before it was more reliant on one player.

No doubt our depth is better, I don't think it's our best 11 though. This team probably rarely played together because of injuries, but how many of today's 11 would get into this?
James/Robinson
Neville
Ferdinand/Terry/Campbell
Cole
Beckham
Gerrard/Lampard/Scholes
Cole
Rooney
Owen

Keeper is debatable, Kane would have to play, Saka for J Cole a debate, nothing else though imo. Appreciate it's 442 vs 433

guys no one cares about the england game, argentina/mexico is on

Yes we’ve got a lot of “samey” players and not too many who are in the “best in the world” debate.

a lot of player shenanigans in this match

I think the team cohesion and spirit is better now than it was then.

In that it was pretty clear Terry was a fucking arsehole who didn't really get on with many others, A Cole was a bit of an odd ball, Gerard a thug and Owen a genuine weirdo.

I'm tempted to say, "but they were doing that in their last game..." oh yeah, versus saudi arabia, and they didn't even win

Argentina are dog dirt and the Mexicans aren't much better either.

Lionel obviously didn't like this take...

Ochoa showing his years there, well placed but not particularly well struck.

agreed, seemed a soft goal to concede from so far out
