The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Let's hope all the players are wearing rainbow vests under their shirts and we score a bucket load later....

Let's call this out for what it is. They are willing to make token gestures as long as it doesn't have any impact on them. The second it looked like it would they drop the issue like a hot potato.

Wearing the armband and taking a booking for doing so would have sent such a strong message, even if it was only done for this game.

I'd be disappointed but I expected it to happen.

Seems the Stone Roses were correct about One Love, all you gotta do is call.

So FIFA don't allow teams/players to make political statements, but host nations who pass on enough brown envelopes can make political statements?
Utterly disgraceful.

Rumour is they would've sent the players off if they didn't remove them.

The refs could've said no, they wouldn't book them, but that's another story

Can't play without a referee.

That's fine. It only needed him to take the initial booking and then remove it. Players are happy enough to risk a booking by diving but not to show support for a cause they claim to be invested in. It absolutely stinks imo.

A little forethought to include rainbow colours into the official kit design would have avoided the threat of a yellow card. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Would have massively affected sales though, so would have been a no go.
Rainbow laces, as said, are definitely the way to go.

I did it earlier, only got 20. As is always the case it's the more recent ones I didn't get

Got them all, but it took me longer to get the more recent ones. Particularly 2014 - I'd erased England's presence from that tournament from my mind.

I’d love the players to be united and tell the FA to get fucked with Kane wearing it and passing it from player to player if necessary.

Doubt very much it would happen, but we’re only one game in and the mess is getting deeper so you have to wonder if at some stage there will be a major implosion.

Not sure FIFA is going to be able to keep a lid on this right to the end. Fingers crossed they can’t.

With all due respect to Iran, surely we could sacrifice a "captain" with a substitution to send a message

Given that Iran shouldn't even be there due to multiple breaches of FIFA rules presumably all due respect is zero?

Lets be honest here all the players of every nation are interested in are kicking a football at the biggest sporting tournament in the world. The thought of players getting booked or even sent off isn't a thought in there mind. All the politics about how much we care about LGBTQ and other stuff is secondary.

Ah well. At least I know not to watch another minute of the tournament. I hope it's a complete fucking disaster.
As mentioned...the actual banning will have more impact than the players wearing them.

The coverage is now in overdrive, it will be mentioned during the build up, the game, the post match interviews. All things broadcast to the world.

FIFA have effectively shot themselves in the foot with the stance. If they thought, we will ban it and that will kill the movement dead in its tracks they have misjudged the situation worse than the Qatar keeper was judging crosses yesterday.

The armbands was teeny tiny gesture that would cause a few ripples and now its a huge issue.
