The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Speak for yourself, headset-and-gloves-in-car man.

Easier to score....5 misses from 9 attempts

Also, why was the keeper appealing for offside?...

(my suggestion wasn't serious but god bless America)
Probably some mark where you're not allowed to go past, I dunno.

I rather think the world's best players would do better than that on pitches that aren't made of corrugated iron.

The kits are equally atrocious then again there where some serious fashion crimes with kits in the 90’s

I have a vague recollection of Robbie Keane having to take one on his Inter debut in a friendly. Missed it I think.

Missed his only ever actual penalty for us too.

3-1 up vs Stockport, he'd scored two already and Muscat/Curle let him have it to get his first hat trick. Missed. Lost 4-3.

Always said he was rubbish.

To be fair the Mighty Magyars they were the best side in the World at the time and it was a huge shock when Germany turned them over in the final.
They hit the woodwork 3 times and had a goal disallowed on their way to defeat. They'd beaten England 6-3 and 7-1 in the months before the tournament.
Is mind boggling how West Germany managed to win the World Cup 9 years after the end of World War 2.

Football wasn't really impacted by the war, the majority of grounds didn't get damaged to any great degree, players mostly survived and like our British players, tended to serve away from anything dangerous and/or carry on playing anyway in wartime fixtures, there was no national league before or after the war anyway so it mostly just carried on as normal, obviously no money in the game then nor was it a global affair. I suppose they lost East German players but it wasn't a deal breaker.

If you want to get freaked out, the gap between West Germany winning the 1954 World Cup and hosting Euro 1988 in West Germany is now smaller than the gap between Euro 1988 and now.

It’s impressive they won it considering their league system was still a shambles then. It was all local, amateur divisions. Adi Dassler did make them some special boots with interchangeable spikes to give them a slight advantage though.

They were professionals, but there was no national league.

Serie A didn't exist until 1930 either and Italy won in 1934 and 1938. Basically nothing pre-European Cup resembles modern football when you look at continental Europe.

Fair enough. I couldn’t remember when they allowed it to be professional. I know being a professional in Germany was banned up at least up until WW2 (unless my memory has failed me, it’s not been long since i read Tor!)
