The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Germany will get through due to Japan’s major cock up v Costa Rica.
I’d be amazed if Belgium go through now, expect Morocco to get something v Canada and don’t expect Belgium to overhaul the goal difference even if they win.

If Belgium win they are through.

Croatia are very very dangerous and it’s a straight shoot out. Morocco are as good as through.

Plus Germany HAVE to win. Japan are through with a draw unless they do that I think (barring the unlikely event of Costa Rica beating Germany)

England at some point are going to have to beat a top side on neutral soil in a knockout game. By my maths they’ve never done it.
Argentina, Portugal, W Germany 66 all at home.
France 1982 group stage
Netherlands 96 group stage and Spain all at home
Argentina 2002 group stage
Germany 2021 home

You could stretch a point and have Belgium in 1990, being as they finished 4th in 1986.

Hmmm I think they were very much on the slide by then, having said that they should’ve beaten us that night.

Just looking at some old World cups if you think 2026 is fucked up just have a look at how things were done in 1950 and 1954.

1950
Group stage had two groups of 4, one group of 3 and one group of 2.
The final wasn’t officially the final it was just by coincidence that Brazil played Uruguay in the final game had Brazil drew they’d have won it.

1954
4 groups of 4 but you only played 2 group games.
If you came top in your group you played another team that came top.
Basically meant team’s calculated who they’d wanted to face in the knockout stages.
W Germany conveniently got battered by Hungary 8-2 to avoid Brazil.

Rumour is 2026 will be 16 groups of 3 with top 2 going through but wouldn’t surprise me if it’s 12 groups of 4 with the top 2 guaranteed progression and the 8 best placed 3rd teams.

America are pushing for penalties in drawn group games for a bonus point, in the same way as the pizza cup

To be fair the Mighty Magyars they were the best side in the World at the time and it was a huge shock when Germany turned them over in the final.
They hit the woodwork 3 times and had a goal disallowed on their way to defeat. They'd beaten England 6-3 and 7-1 in the months before the tournament.

It really isn't, it's tedious as fuck. Miles easier to score as well.

Judge for yourself, along with mucho lolz at how shit MLS was in the 90s.

Easier to score....5 misses from 9 attempts

Also, why was the keeper appealing for offside?...

(my suggestion wasn't serious but god bless America)
