It's a harsh penalty but I can see why it's given. It clearly denies the attacker a goal scoring opportunity.

Intent doesn't matter, it's not in the rules.

If you want to go down the nuance route then everything is open to interpretation and that's shit as we've seen for decades

I find it hilarious that's it's always the noisiest who hate technology the most. Usually telling people on technology (this isn't aimed at you particularly).
