The Nerdy Dr Who Geekfest Thread

Just sat down to watch The Green Death. Giant maggots made with bubble wrap and condoms. Awesome.

Though it does herald the sad departure of Jo Grant. :(

Been announced that season 8 and season 9 (which is in 2015) will not be split into 2, it'll just run all the way until the end of that season. Good news IMO, was fed up of having breaks in the middle of the seasons!

It didn't bother me too much - I'd rather the episodes and any story arc were good above anything else. They just HAVE to improve on the very poor series 7. Smith's first 2 series were really good, I particularly liked the Amy Pond/River Song story arc a few years back.

I think it bothers me because just as the story gets good or I get into it, they have a break and I have to wait to find out the next part, and I'm rather impatient like that. Agree that season 7 was poor, it's strange, but I prefer Matt Smith to David Tennant, but I preferred the story arcs that David Tennant had compared to Matt Smith's, although the whole River Song/Melody Pond was absolutely fantastic.

So when does the Capaldi era begin,is it August/September? I suppose we'll have 7? eps before Christmas then? And another 6-7 in spring?
Really bad timing with the regeneration and long wait after.

Season 7 very poor???? And you're on MY back about not liking everything?? ;)

I think it's September time for series 8.

And yes - the last series was very poor. By a distance the worst since the show returned. I thought the 50th Anniversary was fantastic but the Christmas special (having watched it twice more) was okay and had its moments but overall was a bit of a let down. Should have been 2 parts.

The show badly needs fresh ideas and a new dynamic. I'm hoping that a very different Doctor will help with that.

If you read what I wrote Norway, you'd have read that season 8 and 9 aren't in parts now :p meaning when it starts, it'll go until the end of that one, no breaks.

Will try and find the link, I saw it on IMDB on my phone, with quotes from Steven Moffat.

EDIT: Found a link on DigitalSpy.

Also quotes from Steven Moffat;

"We're not going to do splits, and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that - so it will be the traditional form."

I read what you wrote Sir,but my brain couldn't take such news in good faith. ;)

Well not too long a wait that, when we get tonnes of episodes non-stop. :shakehand:

Season 7 was some way behind 5 and 6 in quality,I agree.Other way around concerning the specials for me,50th was dull and Christmas was good. :)

Agree.

Watched all of Jon Pertwee's episodes and have just started on Tom Baker. I have to say that Pertwee's final season was a bit of a let down with some shoddy effects and iffy plots. Overall though I loved those years (1970-74). Delgado's Master was sadly missed in that last season - he was brilliant.

I've just watched Robot and Ark in Space (Baker's first 2 stories) but the difference between those 2 Doctors really is enormous. Baker so far out on his own - he was a genius.

The Ark in Space had a big influence on Alien as well.

Seasons 13 & 14, the two that follow, are fantastically written, esp 13.

I've seen them, but a very, very long time ago.

I've got seasons 7-14 in their entirety. Now on The Sontaran Experiment which means the next one is my favourite ever story.

One of the first VHS tapes of Dr Who I had.

Hmmm - I have the complete Baker myself on DVD (technically, they belong to Micro but Christmas presents I buy are meant to be shared by me). Might just kick off with Robot tomorrow night when I have the house to myself.

The Sontarans were MILES better in the classic series. I don't like the present day Sontarans.

i could say that about a lot of present day dr who (just an opinion!)

season 13 - zygons, planet of evil (forbidden planet plus a little extra), pyramids of mars, android invasion, brain of morbius, seeds of doom. as good as it ever was or will be.

14 had deadly assassin, robots of death, and weng chiang.

hit and miss after that

Some absolute classics there, indeed. I've seen almost all of those fairly recently but not seen Morbius, Weng Chiang since I was a kid.

that's why you didn't know one of morbius' faces! both of them are great. probably nostalgia but i'd watch either ahead of the current stuff.

Yep - can't really remember it at all. Same goes for Horror of Fang Rock and Image of the Fendahl. It'll be great to see them again actually.
