Villa talk is strange place and many are appalled on the basis that they didn't like him as a player and if he is successful he's likely to move on to Liverpool.

One comment saying that he should be earning his managerial spurs at a club like Palace or Wolves before taking over at a club with the stature of Villa being a particular favourite.

He did well with them in Europe which I trust as a better guide to the title in Scotland.

Good appointment for him I think, ideal for moving up a class from SP. He's got a reasonable squad to try and avoid relegation and stay mid table.....which is where they're at despite what their fans might think

He's a good manager in the way that he'll raise standards, play to his team's strengths and make good decisions. Tactically, he leans on others as he knows it's not his strong point.

He's a snake though and Villa fans are right when they say he'll dump them at the earliest opportunity.

Father in law is a Rangers season ticket holder and he's absolutely gutted. He's also very disappointed with Gerrard himself, as he views the move to Villa as a bit of a sideways one (no Europe etc) - appreciate its the SPL etc, but Rangers are a massive club. I read yesterday that Stevie G himself is good friends with someone high up in the Villa scene, so it probably makes sense for him. Move to Villa, do well and then be first in line for the Liverpool job when Klopp eventually gets bored.

I think he'll do well. It's another club that has the potential to overtake us comfortably (on the pitch) if Fosun don't pull their finger out.

Take the point around Rangers, but given their players, budget and the state of the Scottish Premiership quality wise, I'd say any PL job with a reasonable sized club that isn't Newcastle or Norwich is more attractive.

Doesn't really matter if Rangers are a massive club and regularly play in Europe, if a coach is in anyway ambitious, they have to move to the Premier league, especially to a club like Villa. Even if he does well, as someone else pointed out, he's years away from the Liverpool job.
Seems a good appointment for both party's imo.
Obviously there are no guarantees but he's done a decent job in Scotland.
