The Manager Sacked/Hired Thread 2014/15

Saunders took Doncaster Rovers to the top of league one before he left them to join Wolves. So he must have been doing something right.

They were 2nd when he left (behind a Tranmere team who didn't even make the playoffs). Extremely weak league, they had 50 points from 26 games which is ok but would only have been good enough for 4th spot and seven points off the top at the same point of 2013/14 (the leaders will have miles more than 50 points by that stage this year as well). Played appalling football by all accounts. League was so poor that the job got finished by an old man who hadn't managed in club football for about a decade, and with a historically tiny points total for league winners as well. Given that his CV reads no promotions and knowing what we know of him there isn't much to suggest he'd definitely have seen them over the line.

He isn't a good manager at L1 level, he isn't a good manager at any level. I'm going to back them to lose every game while he's there and I'll be in profit come the end.

Dean, welcome to Crawley Town. What are your first impressions?
First of all, it’s great to be here. Crawley Town as a club has come a long way in a relatively short space of time over the last five years and I’m delighted to be the new manager. I’ve been out of management for 18 months but football is in my blood and I feel I’ve got something to prove. I can’t wait to get started.

As a player you worked under John Gregory when he was assistant manager at Aston Villa didn’t you?

Yes, I have known John a long time. He used to put on finishing practice sessions for me at training and I know what a good coach he is. The circumstances are a bit strange but I know John is pleased that I have come in and he’s already been a great help. Everyone at the club will wish him all the best for his surgery and recovery.

What do you make of the squad as it is?

I’ve watched the last two games myself and seen lots of DVDs so I’m pretty much up to speed on the squad and the players we have. My job is to organise the boys and try and make them better. In return I will demand 100% effort, both in their individual performances and what they do for the team. Every player who wears the Crawley Town shirt must want to be the best player they can be for this football club and also be better than their opponent in every game we play, starting tomorrow against Colchester.
It’s a clean slate. Everyone in the squad will have the chance to impress me. Our recent form hasn’t been great and there are areas of the squad that we need to improve and the owners and the board of directors have promised that they will help me as much as they can when the transfer window opens to get the tools that we need to help keep us up. Staying in League One is our only aim now of course and we still have more than half the season left so there is time.

How big a part have the fans got to play?

Massive. I know it’s a small stadium but I have been here when it’s been full and the atmosphere was superb. As a club we have to go forward together – myself, the players and the supporters. Without the fans’ backing it will make what we want to achieve even harder. It’s a fresh start on Sunday against Colchester and I’m asking all our supporters if they can make it to get down and get behind the team. In return I can promise that the players will wear the shirt with pride and give 100%. I will demand nothing less because without hard work by everyone we can’t make the progress we all want for Crawley Town.

Wonder if he wants RoJo on loan

Time for Curbishley to crawl out of his hole and take the Palace job? Or is it too risky for him?

He has been out of the game for a few years now, but it is a premier league club in London, so Curbishley might be interested.

He won't get offered it. Curbishley would be an equally out of touch appointment to Warnock. Any Premier League vacancy that comes up, you can guarantee Pulis being up for it. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THIS JOB.

If Sherwood hasn't taken Brighton I could see Palace making a move in that direction.

Ally McCoist has been mentioned on the Palace forum. I know that means nothing, but McCoist said a while ago that he would like to manage in the premier league one day.

I think he'd only really be interested if Palace had another 10 points on the board. He might make some vague noises about being willing to talk to them (this is a man who thinks managers should interview chairmen rather than the other way round, the man's arrogance knows no bounds) but he won't really be up for it even if Palace are daft enough to look that way.

McCoist won't get another manager's job anywhere.

If they want to guarantee a stupid wage bill, relegation, and kenny miller up front, and can't think of a better choice.

I think they might have a punt on Eddie Howe. Whether he goes or not if asked is another matter (although commuting to London from his south coast base would be less hassle than Burnley was).

Mcoist may be a disaster if they go in that direction, the dearth of managerial talent out there is unbelievable. Can't see them approaching another club. Could easily be another foreign imported disaster.

Can't see him leaving Bournemouth at the moment.

Someone is going to take a punt on Karl Robinson at some point. Whether he would want to be pitched into a relegation battle with MK flying is quite another question.

Brighton have approached him and he's turned them down. No PL club is going touch him until he's done anything above L1. For all the decent football his teams play he doesn't have much in the way of tangible achievement behind him. He hasn't as yet done any more for McDons than Ince did and I can't see Parish getting on the blower to my mate Charlie.

I can't think of anyone available, and I doubt foreign managers of any good standing would look at Palace as a good prospect.
A year ago I'd have said Røsler but he turned out to be a dud.

How about Nigel Adkins then? Scarred by the Reading experience but could do a decent job with that Palace squad

Tony Popovic has been mentioned on FF. Palace legend but he's managing some no mark team back in Australia.

Not backing Ally for the job here but the manager doesn't guarantee a stupid wage bill. The board does. A manager may recommend a player that is not good enough and wants £40k a week but he can't give him that deal.
