I was under the impression that selling a lot of players in a short period wasn't a great idea for FFP? Unless we're looking to definitely keep Jonny, Raul, Sa, Fabio, Podence and Kilman

It doesn't matter that much tbh

Depends on the balance of the squad left behind. I suppose they're lining up players like Neto, Nunes, Gomes for big sales in upcoming windows. Alex Scott, if we signed him, would be signed with a view to sell him in for a big fee in a few years...

If they are selling RAN and Giles for a combined 20m (just as an example) and getting Creswell for 2m you'd hope that the profit accumulated so far would be with some incoming attacking players in mind which they know will come at a reasonably significant cost.

I know. It doesn't seem likely, and goes against logic.

But I'm trying to make sense of Doherty and Cresswell (who probably won't even sign)
Unless we're exactly recreating Nuno's tactics then it still makes no sense as Doherty is also not much use as a conventional RWB (as shown with Ireland and at Spurs). He didn't have the engine to get up and down like you'd normally expect someone to do in that role five years ago let alone now, you have to park him miles up the pitch and have the RCH cover a load of ground in that channel defensively. And as he can't beat a man or cross you have to play him exactly as we did between 2017 and 2020, rather than how pretty much every other wing back in the world plays.

Also if you wanted to switch to a back five and were seemingly favouring UK/Irish experienced players then why on earth would you sell Coady, who I'm sure would rather be playing for us than Leicester if you gave him the choice...

Ever hear about the sceptre that remained after several exorcisms?

Love that he used Ryan Giggs as the photo on the front cover. A player who in over 20 years basically never played in a 3-5-2 at club level :D

I suppose you get dead ball threat from Cresswell (not that it's a good idea, for a variety of reasons). I'm not even sure who'd take free kicks at the moment, be they wide deliveries or for a shot on goal, Neto if he's on the pitch?

Matheus used to take free kicks for Sporting sometimes. Just absolutely leathers them.

Finally, a successor to the crown

3 years for Doc is mad, got to be a Mendes favour. Cresswell would be OK for back up I guess, but 2.5m seems like 2.5m too much.
It's the least important position to recruit. Got about 8 options there. Doherty was nuts but probably a Mendes favour. Creswell is inexplicable.
