The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Think Creswell is a good solid Premier League level player. I don't mind him coming in to compete with Bueno but you'd think that definitely means Giles and RAN are on their way.

I've no problem with that transfer strategy - IF the players are good.

I said this towards the end of last season but Joao Gomes fits that bill and although it's early days, he looks to be a superb player. As long as we improve our scouting and target good players and good professionals, that's fine by me. There will be good players out there that fit our strategy.

A different approach than paying massively over the odds for the likes of Semedo, Guedes, Fabio, Nunes and (although I like him and think he's still got a lot to offer) Cunha is not a bad thing at all.

Doherty admittedly doesn't get the pulse racing but let's see who else comes in - got to trust in what Lopetegui is trying to build IMO.

It's not about 'good' for me, it's simply about whether they're signings that are made for footballing reasons.

We paid over the odds for Semedo, Cunha and Nunes, and got Lemina and JG pretty cheap, but all are decent footballers and you could see the thinking behind their signings, at least in theory.

Doesn't matter whether it's £35m for Fabio, £27.5?m for Guedes or nothing for Doc, none of those are signed for footballing reasons and that's what we need to fuck right off with

I get that we do need experience in the team but Doc and Cresswell as the FBs will be awful

If we sign Cresswell I’d assume we’re all in on Bueno (he’s one of the few I’m bothered about keeping tbf). Cresswell as someone to play the odd game. But he’s 34 so I doubt he’s got much more than a year left in him at a decent level

I'm not ready to shit the bed yet, and am happy to give Lop the benefit of the doubt etc etc but I'm struggling to see what we're building here, unless there's a late flurry of signings that makes it clearer

Cresswell and Bueno at LB is not a bad pair. Allows us to sell Giles and RAN or play the latter further forwards. You’d hope Bueno in time will nail down the LB starting spot but in short term Cresswell would be ok, a much better option than we’ve brought in as cover at RB!

Unless we are looking to play that......
Lopetegui has rarely ever played it anywhere, bar a couple of cup games in January with a mix-and-match team we've never started a game with that shape under him, he didn't trial it in nothing games at the end of the season or switch to it when away from home against strong opposition, so I really doubt it. Hope we don't anyway, hello pure stodge again.

If it’s true then the plan is quite obvious - get money for RAN and Giles and spend a fraction on Cresswell as a replacement.

I know. It doesn't seem likely, and goes against logic.

But I'm trying to make sense of Doherty and Cresswell (who probably won't even sign)
