Interesting development. Doubt we'll be offered as much from somewhere else.

Yeah (he hasn't failed one anyway so it's a moot point)

I don’t think wrong sided is the problem with Maguire. Combining the speed of erosion with the turning circle of the Torrey Canyon is rather more problematic.
Not sure what the Issue is with Maguire, if any club could get the Maguire that plays for England he would be a fantastic signing.

It's one of the strange anomalies, Maguire and tyrannosaurus Rex Arms have, really good for country less good for Club.

Pickford has been outstanding for Everton the last two seasons, comfortably the difference between them going down and staying up. He's an excellent keeper.

Maguire is physically limited, you can get him to a point where you strip down his distribution so he's less vulnerable there and hope that he gets a run of games to give him confidence and reduce basic errors, nothing is ever making him able to turn or run.

Pickford gets a bum rep because he's... well he's a bit of a pasty ass, ain't he.

I quite like him, never afraid to rip into his defense and always pulls some wild saves out of his ass when I watch him. Wouldn't call him "elite", quite, but the way people seem not to rate him has always bemused me.

He has a cunning ability to combine some genuinely superlative saves with appalling errors that would have made Alan Rough blush (Origi v late goal in the derby, Newcastle goal mouth scramble where he makes the save but has no idea he is stood two feet behind the goal line).

He isn’t completely shit, but he certainly isn’t as good as he believes either. I will concede the point that his good stuff has made a significant contribution to Everton surviving the last two seasons. Which is a shame.

You're going back a way with most of his more egregious stuff though. Like the Origi one was December 2018.

Does he big himself up to the media a lot? I don’t pay attention to that stuff, even with our own players a lot of the time.

Even if he does, how wrong is he? He’s been the best English keeper going by some distance since COVID, IMV.

Going back way further than that. He took Joe Hart's place in late 2017 and has easily been the best option since then. Could argue that Hart should have dropped out earlier as he went on one of the weirdest, sharpest declines I've ever seen.

I remember there being a smidge of competition at first; for a minute it seemed like Butland was going to be a good option himself. Since then no one has really come close (maybe Ramsdale in the eyes of some).

Butland broke his ankle before Euro 2016 and has never been even close to the same since.

Man, was it that long ago already?

I guess 2020 irrevocably fucked my perception of time.

Nick Pope would be a contender, but he has a mistake in him sometimes as well. And his kicking his pretty poor.

Pope is just a decent keeper, in the days when most/nearly all top flight teams had an English keeper he wouldn't be anywhere near the conversation. Way better 80s/90s keepers (adjusting for how the game has changed) never got near a cap. He's one that Newcastle will look to upgrade on providing they stay on the same track.

Napoli buy Kilman, we sign Elvedi, Doc plays RCB in a back three.
