The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Well I mean that's fine if it's your preference but it's not a view that a lot of the best coaches in modern football will share.

Centre halves who can 'just' defend don't often play Premier League football, everything else has to be a majour consideration when selecting players. It's not even enough to just be a good goalkeeper now, watch how Onana revolutionises how Man Utd play next season. He's going to make them such a different proposition with the way he helps his side build possession.

As I mentioned earlier as well, it's not just about build up, some centre halves will be less effective defenders on their weaker side in certain situations. A proper analyst would be able to explain exactly why but they're far more likely to lose duels or commit fouls when they've been turned into the channel between themselves and the full back.
I think it depends on the player. John Terry was right footed as was Jaap Stam and VVD is right footed too. Boly was markedly worse on the right despite being very right footed.

All are/ were comfortable on their left side.

Dawson, Bruce, Dias and a whole host of others are uncomfortable on it so you'd never play them there

Of course if Lop wants our CB's to split and a midfielder to drop in and become a 3 at any point you want a left and right sided CB as they fill that wide berth on their natural side.

A coach once told me it's about body shape and which side you are dominant with.

I guess the same in all sports, open side and blindside flankers in rugby, left and right hand bat in cricket.

I know that there are centre backs that are comfortable on their weaker side. Not all of them are though, some of the best in the World are more comfortable on one side than the other so I don't think it's anything to do with those players being 'world class' or not. Obviously players who can play both ways will be more valuable because of their versatility.
That’s true, it’s about the recruitment team finding those players and with us it’s probably going to have to be a young player that will be a bit of a gamble.
I agree that Kilman is shit. Unfortunately Wolves don't agree.
This we definitely agree on.
Yeah, there are more right footed centre backs who can defend on the left than the other way around for this reason. The best ones deal with situations and progress the ball as if they were left footed though.
Again i agree, hopefully we can find this player if we can’t find a left footed one to play there but looks like we’re sticking with Max as you’ve said below.
I don't know enough about Elvedi to comment really. According to Transfermarkt he seems to have spent most of his time on the right, even playing at RB on occasion. Maybe he can play on the left, I don't know? If not, then hopefully we just sell Kilman and buy someone better who can.

Yeah, I saw a really good graphic explaining how a 'wrong sided' defenders body shape in certain situations made them more susceptible to committing fouls and decreased their chances of winning the ball. I think they used Harry Maguire as an example but I can't find it for the life of me.

I don’t think wrong sided is the problem with Maguire. Combining the speed of erosion with the turning circle of the Torrey Canyon is rather more problematic.

Are you suggesting that Maguire be bombed by Blackburn Buccaneers, Hawker Hunters and de Havilland Sea Vixens?

I still think Maguire is a decent defender, but man united was the wrong place for him. Maguire isn't comfortable playing in a high line and gets exposed. Put him in a more pragmatic team and he'd look a lot better.

Booo! I got all excited when I saw that post that we'd got Alex Scott!

Clearly the Maguire referred to by some in this thread isn’t the same player that has played a big role in getting England to the late stages of both the European Championships and the WC!

The same player who made only 8 PL starts last season, yes?

Wonder if they'll use this to bury the Doc signing

Might be worth doing a Doc bingo game.

Things that will be said via Hobbs and Co

"He knows the club"
"Will fit in straight away"
"Great experience gained at Spurs and Atletico"
"Played under elite managers"
"Has something to prove"
"No brainer to sign him when we knew he was available"
"Lopetegui has watched videos of him and has been impressed (sadly we have lost all the pre-Nuno match stuff though)"

"Can't run for shit if it involves tracking back"
"Nailed on to give away a stupid penalty, bonus points if it stops us qualifying for Europe"
"Ups the squad quota for arms flappers, needed if Max departs"

If Hobbs says any of those 3, I will pay for a statue of him to be built outside the Stadium
