The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Scott does look decent but I can't help but think it would be a risk to spend a hefty chunk of our budget on him. Hopefully we have other targets....
I think you're right, but it's fair to say there is a lot of reason to mistrust the people running the club to get things right. They are definitely in an 'earn our trust' situation, and currently they aren't doing a particularly good job of it.

I'm not going to lie, I'm starting to get really pissed off with this Summer. Seems we're getting every binary choice wrong, because we're fucking idiots
It's decisions like buying Guedes which are really frustrating too. Without Guedes we'd have more flexibility this summer.

Can't argue with that mate

Yep still a way to go for the trust earning, been encouraged by our business since Hobbs came in, well I was until the Doc affair, but I'm even getting over that now.

Said it a week or so ago and will say it again. Just because we are about to re-sign Matt Doherty, it doesn't mean the rest of the window will be shit. I'm sure the club have their reasons (free transfer, home grown quota, likely he accepts he's going to be back up, will likely cause no issues and settle in to the dressing room quickly etc etc etc). Yes, I know we have to ignore the footballing side of it to justify the signing, but the hope is Lop has some plan in place. As & when Doc is announced, he'll get my full support and I'll want him to succeed. I assume most of us are in the same boat.

With all that said above, I *am* slightly miffed that we haven't got a couple of first team ready signings over the line yet. I know most clubs/managers want to get their transfers done early in the market, and I know it isn't always realistic, but I feel like we were perhaps in a strong position to get some deals done given how early we have sold the likes of Neves & Coady - but still nothing.

The rumours of walking away from Scott because we don't want to pay £10m up front, turning £30 odd million down for Kilman, then signing Doc and a lower league journyman goalkeeper etc doesn't particularly help the mood. I'm happy to trust the club for now because they still have time on their side, but the longer we go without adding a forward or some proper first team additions, the more vocal the fanbase are going to become with their criticism - and they're already pretty vocal.

Is it fair to compare Cundle with Scott in terms of how they play?
No,

Scott is a better dribbler of the ball and likes to commit players like Grealish. His end product needs work but he can certainly beat a man and shoot/ get crosses in. He's would really work as a 10/ 8 in Lop's system.

Very much like James Madison. We should just pay the money as nobody is going to lose on a transfer below £25m

Cundle is a creative 8/10, very skillful, bags of flair and can thread through balls for fun. Likes to strike the ball and has a real eye for goal.

Think more Odegaard in style when he was just finding his feet in Holland.

Both could play together easily behind a central forward. Neither are very good in the air.

Joe Hodge isn't a very good footballer and certainly not above Lg1.

To baulk at signing Alex Scott for £25m is ridiculous, even if they want a whole £10m up front. He's a really good player, he's homegrown, he's got a useful skillset that we need more of, and his value is only going one way. It's fucking idiotic

The days when England had Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge, but no proper left sided midfielder (Joe Cole was about the nearest and he wasn't an exact fit). Endless clamour of "just play them together" as they were both decent going forward. Sven tried it a couple of times and it was awful.

Also loads of calls for Lee Naylor to play as a winger for Wolves, mercifully no-one actually did it.

RAN has more of a skillset to change role I suppose and it appears Lopetegui doesn't fancy him as a LB.

Is Alex Scott a demonstrably surer bet than Gyökeres? Different positions obviously, but still.

Another odd decision from a footballing perspective, as he is about 3rd choice LB. Unless Lop is planning on using him as a winger on a more permanent basis?

From a business point of view, I can understand us not wanting to let him go if clubs are only offering a loan. We might as well keep him if that's the case.
At this moment in time is what Liam is saying so could change. Guess it depends on how Giles does and if we are looking at or trying to buy another LB/LWB

A loan is OK for RAN for me as he will probably do well in that league and from an FFP perspective it's best not to sell too many of your assets all in the same financial period.

Didn't work out so badly for Mr G Bale.

Just remembered that Mick played Doherty at RM in a 4-4-2 in the first game of his second spell in charge of Ireland. He looked miles out of his depth.

Against Gibraltar.
