The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

If JL thinks he is brilliant, I would ask him to return to Spain tbh.

For whatever reason he is rejoining, Lop's has said yes and your theory holds up more than anything I can think of but the end result is, he is happy with that. He wasn't he would have pissed off weeks ago.
The point I was (poorly) trying to make is that just because he's signed off on it doesn't mean he's happy about it. Doesn't mean he's a pushover either.

If we are working to a limited budget and Doc has been presented as a cheaper and homegrown option for a back up/rotation RB/RWB then I can understand why Lopatron would say yes.

Focus on spending money elsewhere, I would hope.

I don't particularly like it though, at all.

Could be Lopetegui is taking a hit here so he gets a target he really wants somewhere else. Or maybe he doesn't really care too much? He's said find me a cheap, homegrown, experienced player to play as a back up full back, Hobbs has come back with Doherty as an easy option and JL signs it off as it's a low priority position?Doesn't have to be as simple as 'signed under Lopetegui = Lopetegui thinks he's brilliant'.

Equally, signing Doherty doesn't mean Lopetegui has to walk. They held lengthy talks where transfer targets surely will have been discussed, after which Julen decided to stay.

He's not going to walk.
I can buy the bolded bit.

He walks if he doesn't get that target and I don't trust Shi to sanction it.

No way Hobbs brought up Doc as back up FB, it's clearly a Mendes signing. It's hugely embarrassing for anybody in football recruitment to come up with Doherty as a back up FB based on the entirety of the evidence out there.

And if we were worried about money we'd have sold Kilman and gone for De Vrij on a free.

FWIW I think its a fairly inexpensive signing, giving us reasonable cover for Semedo, especially if he's not using Hoever and thinks Lembiska isn't quite ready.
Tell me you've never seen Matt Doherty play football without telling me you've never seen Matt Doherty play football.

But if this is a situation as you have (quite well) made out - Accept the 2023 Ola John and you will get the players on your list, then he is happy or happy to concede to get his targets....so ultimately happy with the set up agreed in May.

Then I can see Johnster's point on him walking in August if the 2nd part of that agreement has been fucked up by Jeff. Would say there is currently enough movement that is keeping him happy we are doing it though.

Edit: I won't use the word Happy again today,. Over done it now.

Dele Ali next....
I mean, in a world where we are throwing free agent washed up ex-England internationals names around, I'm sticking with Ross Barkley as my predicted surprise signing.

Free, lived and played in the area before, played 30 odd games last season for Nice (4 goals), and is looking for a club.

Just fits the description Hobbs put out of wanting players with something to prove.

edit - this isn't me saying I think we should sign Ross Barkley. Just throwing a name out there.

David Moyes managed United.

Elite is an extremely exclusive term. Only a handful at any time. Lop ain’t that.

Did Moyes also manage a major international team and win a major trophy too? I'm talking cumulative elements here.

Is Unai Emery elite?

One Europa League trophy does not an elite manager make, nor does the list of clubs in the CV just by existing there. It’s the “Djimi Traore won the UCL” argument.

Well he's definitely at the very top end of what we can realistically attract, and Wolves need him more than he needs Wolves, so I wouldn't annoy him if possible.

If he thinks Doherty is an acceptable player then I just strongly disagree with him.

Jesus man, if you love Ross Barkley so much why don't you just marry him.

(I do recall people frothing that we didn't sign him when he had 2 good games for Villa)

Wouldn’t dispute this at all, especially the first bit.

As an outsider who doesn't know much about the inner workings of a football club I'm not sure Hobbs would know a fat lot about Doherty.

He was appointed Head of emerging talent in 2018 (first FT position with us) and was looking at recruitment from the youth groups - u23's and by the time that remit expanded to the first team Doherty was leaving anyway.

Would Hobbs have been around him that much to make the recommendation now?

This feels more like Shi's doing behind the scenes.

If we were on the verge of signing Doherty, and I saw that quote (assuming its true and not written by someone on here) I'd tear the fucking contract up.
Been here long enough,
on the verge of outstaying his welcome,
not really a big club,
bollocks to what his Dad thinks,
wanted to be somewhere else,
if the move hadn't have come, I'd have left anyway...

Any one of those is a good reason not to resign him.
Shocking news!

I think there are multiple reasons why you would consider a manager elite, and yes I'd put Emery up there.

Lopetegui has gravitas, he's managed an elite club and an elite international team and has honours. We're punching.
