The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

If JL has rubber stamped this signing then that's a concern. If hes had Doc foisted on him them that's a concern, doubt he'll stay long term. I'm concerned.

I don’t think age and fitness are a factor for a free agent signed at start of July. More of an issue is the quality/suitability.

If he’s signed as a RWB then it’s a decent signing. Anything else and it’s bizarre.

Having slept on it and TRYING to offer some perspective from the clubs stand-point, we've already seen with the Kilman/Kilmarnock situation that the club obviously hold certain players in a higher regard than we do on this board. Perhaps this is another situation where Hobbs/Shi have gone to Lop and said something like "look, we know this lad - he will come. He won't cost us anything and he'll fit in to the first team squad without any issue" - then Lop's had a look and possibly has a plan for him. Maybe he likes the idea of having a 'specialist' RWB that we can bring on and switch to a back 5? Who knows.

I'm not at the stage yet where I've completely panned off the whole transfer window based on this signing, which it seems maybe others are. To me it says that we are comfortable with Semedo as first choice, we're happy with Doc as an option in a different system/back up, and that we plan to spend our money elsewhere i.e. a forward etc

That's me trying to be completely understanding of the clubs point of view. I suspect they didn't expect such a negative response to the potential signing, but then I've seen lots of people on Social Media completely behind bringing him back, so God knows.

The negative views (outside of here) are probably less than what was received when Dawson and Lemina were being linked.

So from a club angle, not that many negative views

Fair point, this - I think it's only right to judge the window once it's closed. Granted, it's not the best start but I don't doubt we've got targets and discussions are ongoing with players who will be rather better received (on here anyway).

I hate pre-season - always have, always will!

I'll take issue with this Jinky. I can't see him looking to be earning less than he has been on at Tottenham, especially if he has offers from alternative clubs such as the rumoured Saudi links. He'll also no doubt be looking for a signing on fee.

He won't be cheap, he'll be a high earner and he's not fit for purpose in the system used by the manager last season.

BTW I do agree with your point that if he does sign, it doesn't mean that the whole window a disaster.

It's mad a that a few days ago we were on the brink of getting £35m for Max Kilman. Now we haven't got £35m, we're paying Max Kilman more money, and we're signing Matt Doherty. Like what the fucking fuck.

If you I don’t laugh I’ll cry.

Like others have said, this doesn’t make it a disastrous summer etc but it’s still not a great indicator of our recruitment strategy

Throw shade at Jeff and Hobbs but 1 man approves the signings and is clearly happy to have him on board. After a big media song and dance about transfers, anyone we bring in is done on the nod of the head from Lops.

I don't think this is true for one minute.

Mendes greasy mitts are all over this and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the type of deal that Jeff promised Lop wouldn't happen when he joined but has now gone back on his word.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the kind of shit that nearly made Lop walk.

Hey, it's not what I think - but it might be what the club think.

FWIW, I don't think he'll be on anything close to what he was at Spurs. He'll know what the crack is at Wolves, he'll have an idea of what he (and others) were earning when he was here before. I'm sure he's not stupid enough to ignore the amount of football he's played (and the level of those performances) since leaving here too. I don't think he can command a massive wage, and moving to Saudi isn't for everyone. Someone has already posted a quote in this thread where Doc said his dad would have preferred him to stay at Wolves rather than move to Spurs. I can't imagine he has any desire to move to Saudi and from what I remember, he's quite a family man/close to his dad etc.

Anyway, just trying to be fair. Like everyone else, I didn't think we'd be discussing Matt Doherty in this window!

Maybe we're just after free agents. Ross Barkley to turn up in a week or so as we appear to be in for another midfielder?

In other news, Pau Torres flies into Birmingham today to sign for Villa on a 5 year deal. Now, where's Doc...

If it is what you think then Lops will walk.

If he is in charge when the window closes he has approved each and every deal done in the window, inc the keeping of Max Kilman,

I think he took huge persuading to stay.

If he doesn't get what he wants this window he walks and we end up with Rob Edwards. He doesn't need this shit.

Doherty is a Mendes client and this stinks.

I was thinking that part of the reason that he decided to continue was his relationship with Hobbs, who just happens to be giving his son an education into that side of the football business. If Hobbs and his son are being sidelined in the decision making process for signing players then they may as well all pack up.

I don't think the Johnster is right on this one

I doubt Lop's has gone to Hobbs with the request to sign Doc but Hobbs has put the name in front of JL and given the thumbs up

If, after the talks on his future he walked out shaking Jeff's hand after being told "gonna sell a few, invest next to non of it and you will have to settle for players like Matt Doherty and whoever else Jorge needs to find a home for" then Lop is weaker than Lage.

We know that is not the case and if he had concerns, he would walk without a moments thought

If our scouts cannot find a replacement for Kilman and a first choice RB for the money offered by Napoli they should be sacked!

Lop is not elite. Very good, yes. Elite, no.

And even elite managers have weird blindspots.

Let's be honest, shit like signing Matt fucking Doherty again in 2023 is the kind of thing you'd expect the likes of Lage to passively accept, not our elite manager. It doesn't add up
He can't be considered a straight back up for the RB position. If he is, concerns over everyone's judgement at the club especially as we were exposed to his days as a standard RB .

So, if we rule out insanity (for now)

It is the idea of having a RWB for the games where we move to 5 at the back (start or change in game) and the thinking is Jonny (or Bolla if we still like him) will do the job covering in a back 4.

We've not switched to a back five very often at all, that would still be weird to sign a player explicitly for a system we will very rarely play (and we'd have to make two subs to accommodate him, an extra centre half then him at RWB),
