The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Thought I'd sleep on it before commenting properly to see if I could find a more positive spin on signing Doherty but I just feel totally depressed about the whole thing. The only shred of comfort I can take atm is that he's proven me wrong before so I suppose there's potential for it to happen again.

Straight off the bat I think this is the most depressing transfer we've made in decades. The only other signing I've felt so negatively about has been Leon Clarke but at least with him he'd had a good recent record in the League we were in at the time, there was a slither of hope that he'd continue his Cov form at Wolves. We're getting a Matt Doherty with fuck all match fitness and fuck all motivation to succeed. He's just spent 6 months sat on the bench in Madrid and now he's winding his career down and has chosen us as an easy option, a safe comfortable club where he can trundle around for a few years picking up Premier League wages for the last time.

I can't even try and convince myself that signing him doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, that he won't play that much and he won't cost anything to sign. He will play. Semedo doesn't have the consistency to play for a whole season without getting dropped at least once even before you factor in injuries & suspensions. You're pretty much writing off a cup run as well unless we switch to a back 3 in those games to accommodate him.

I'd managed to convince myself that we'd finally started to take recruitment seriously, that we were going to have a really smart summer, offloading a lot of deadwood, cashing in on a few saleable assets at the right time and making some sensible moves for underrated or upcoming players. This is just laziness. The cheapest Mendes client straight off the carousel.

Agree with all this.

On Twitter I saw four separate Wolves fans on a single Doherty thread, trying to big up the deal, mentioning 'leadership' as a reason to sign him!?

Never once thought of Doc as being a 'leader', any more than Adama was. Why do people assume this of a player just cos he's the wrong side of 30?

i’ve seen a lot of posts (mainly on MM but also on here) saying how much people
trust Hobbs to replace those we have shipped out so far.

If this true and we do sign MD then either:
  • hobbs actually hasn’t got a clue
  • jeff is still pulling the strings
Very worrying indeed.

Doesn’t seem to show any ambition at all for the coming season if true coupled with the Kilmarnock situation. Whatever happened to Bolla? Is he still an Hungarian international? Surely should be pushing for a place in the squad?

For Kilmarnock read Killman. Bloody Spellcheck!

We shipped Bolla as he couldn't get a work permit originally. Presumably some match time for Grasshoppers must have got him some permit points, but who knows as the club are shit at communication.

Can't wait for the first Doherty masterclass of 2023-2024. Fucks sake.

Throw shade at Jeff and Hobbs but 1 man approves the signings and is clearly happy to have him on board. After a big media song and dance about transfers, anyone we bring in is done on the nod of the head from Lops.

So we know Semedo is 1st choice (2nd....3rd and 4th...as well now).

Do we think no one wants Jonny but we are not convinced he will be able to cover a whole season why we let Dexter go off and get a year of football. So Doc comes in to share the cover duty with him? Bar the odd Cup game surely his Prem game time is going to make him look like a regular at Atletico.
Some grand straw clutching and deep diving to try and put reasoning behind the move I know.

Long term plan is to see Dexter as a 1st teamer from 2024.

Might as well park the Bolla bus. Would expect a dodgy transfer of him shortly (don't think he can be loaned to Grasshoppers again as they can only have 2 from us now?)
Or maybe it will be Bolla taking the place of Jonny in the scenario plucked out of the thin air by me.

I read plenty last night that this was a great signing, instantly becomes 1st choice, smart signing, great cover, clever signing etc so what the fuck do I know

Can we just see the Bolla bus before locking it away? Its got to be better than the diesel guzzling clapped out effort we gladly sent away via auto trader a few years back.

Clearly that clapped out efforts has turned into a classic...

Would say we need to trust the scouts and the coaching team on Bolla and if they think is he isn't good enough but then we are signing Doc again, so!

Until Bolla goes I am going to go with Doc is there in a similar position to King. I know that will be proved wrong but its stick my head up my arse or face the thought that we think he is a genuine challenger for RB.

Looks like Napoli have moved on from Kilman and he will sign a new contract. That coupled with Doc coming back are the complete opposite of what i think we should do and it’s not even close.

Will wait and see what happens with the rest of the transfer window but it doesn’t look great at the minute.

Haven't posted about Doc gate yet - I don't think signing him makes any sense whatsoever. Even before taking into account his footballing abilities, we don't play the right way to incorporate him, he's the wrong sort of age, he's not going to be anywhere near peak fitness etc.

Seems really odd.

Strange decision by the club (and no, not just fucking Shi and fucking Hobbs - this would clearly be a club decision, sanctioned by JL as well).

I would be delighted if he turned out to be a masterstroke of a signing, but we know what he can (and can't) do. I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong if he plays well but there's absolutely nothing that I can see that would point to that happening.

Really really odd.

I’m already yearning for those long days of summer when there was no sign of any incomings at Wolves and I was almost contemplating watching tennis. Was it only yesterday lunchtime? Simpler, happier times…
