If we do that then we are mugs. It's not a good way to operate.
I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as that. Like any business, you have to make a decision based on the specific opportunity (or deal) in front of you.

I certainly wouldn’t call them “mugs” if they decide to pay an extra £1m to secure the player in this instance, for example. Particularly if he’s one of the managers/clubs top targets.

Like I say, it will be Flamengo that come out of it looking like wankers, not us.

It's not about the amount of money involved though really. Its the principle. We'd already agreed a fee with them at an agreed price. They're taking the piss. Gomes may or may not turn out to be a quality player but its not really a position we are desperate for a player in. I'm sure there are other central midfield players of a similar profile on the clubs radar.

I think principles kind of went out the window a bit once we got into bed with Mendes to get to the PL and Europe.

Gotta judge every case individually, if Gomes turns out to be a top player I wouldn't mind us getting our hands dirty a little to secure his signing tbh

Lamptey hasn't been the same player since his injury, but he's been back about a year now and is still a bit part player for them. Not sure whether that's because of the injury or lack of opportunity, but they are currently playing a career midfielder at right back. There's a good chance we wouldn't be signing the player people think we are.

It’s simply our first time dealing direct with a Brazilian club for a prize young asset as work permit rules used to mean we couldn’t get them.

If they have a past of fucking about and being greedy with Benfica, now that the riches of the premier league are knocking on the door this was always likely.

Looks like Newcastle are finding the same with franca

Although I agree with that in principle, you run the risk of having to get your hands dirty with every future deal you ever consider, my take is let him go to Lyon, let him 'pull a Guedes' and we buy him for half price in the Summer !

i would hope there’s someone at the club that has considered this possibility and discounted it?

I think that we would all like Gomes to join us and perhaps he will still, but theres dark forces at work here and Wolves are wise in playing this with a very straight bat and integrity.
Frankly we may already have the qualities this lad could bring in with Lamina and Bouba
So with only 10 days or so left we must now look at other options and priorities, like getting Dawson over the line and a someone who can plunder a few goals (I know, Easier said than done 😏)
Don't you worry about the Dawson Deal

For anyone playing the Fantasy ITK game in the sub forum on here...

Going back to Joao, we agree to pay £1M, they want £2M - we offer £2M, they move to £4M - if Joao stays strong, we can still get him, but might go right to the wire.
