The Nigerian ‘billionaire’ linked with a £90million takeover of Championship club Sheffield United is the director of an airline company — but there is no evidence a Tingo Airlines flight has ever taken place, report Joey D’Urso and Matt Slater.
In November 2020, a post on Dozy Mmobuosi’s personal Facebook page said “fly with Tingo Airlines today” and described routes between London and west Africa.
The company is registered in England as Tingo Airlines Limited and declared a share capital of £1billion in August 2019, with Mr Mmobuosi the sole shareholder.
It is registered at an address in Harpenden in Hertfordshire — but the address was removed in December 2019 with a note saying it was “invalid or ineffective and was forged”.
Tingo Airlines Limited is also facing an active proposal to be struck off at Companies House, the UK’s registrar of companies, as it is nearly three months late with filing basic paperwork.
An Instagram page for Tingo Airlines links to a website that does not exist. It also shares images of an Airbus A321 that appears to be digitally doctored to apply the ‘Tingo Airlines’ livery, removing a door and adding too many windows in the process.
In an interview with Vanguard Nigeria in November 2019, Omiete Iyenemi Charles, described as acting CEO of Tingo Airlines, said the company is “in the process of obtaining our UK Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC)” but there is no evidence of Tingo having an AOC.
Justin Williams, chief operating officer of InsightX, a due diligence and reputational risk agency that has worked with 10 Premier League clubs, said: “The issues raised in relation to Tingo and Mr Mmobuosi by The Athletic demonstrate how important it is that football clubs commission in-depth intelligence and due diligence on all potential investors, partners and sponsors.”
Mmobuosi’s bid for Sheffield United is being assessed by the English Football League, which applies its owners’ and directors’ test to all potential investors. The EFL will be seeking answers to questions about the source and sufficiency of the Nigerian’s funds.
Mmobousi and Tingo have not responded to requests for comment. Sheffield United declined to comment.
