The Football News Thread 2019/20 - everything not Wolves

It does because their case against City obviously had huge holes in it

That's a bit of an assumption. However, i see what you mean.

If most of the allegations are time-bound then how on earth did UEFA think they would stick.

Likewise, if you've done any dodgy non FFP compliant dealings, just delay the investigation for 5 years and you'll be fine and get a slap on the wrist

Doesn't help us (maybe) but can't say I am that disappointed by the news. FFP is bollocks, there to stop any upstarts muscling their way in amongst the big boys with financial backing.

The original intention of it was sound enough - you don't want rogue owners capsizing a club into catastrophe and then disappearing into the sunset because they chased a bit of success. It's helped to stop events like Malaga/Anzhi that we had in the last decade where top flight clubs are going virtually bankrupt (and obviously Leeds a further decade before that).

But it got bastardised to the point where it ringfences the already wealthy and successful. Blame Platini for that.

I have been pawing over the verdict for City. So if I get this right it actually says you did cook your books but it was long enough ago not to warrant a ban and when the enquiry came knocking you were obstructive but not in such a way as to be malicious and calculating. Is that a fair summary?
If so FFP is dead in the water.

In a nut shell that's basically it. They haven't been cleared, it just either happened so long ago or it wasn't severe enough that the penalty was deemed too strong.
I wouldn't say FFP is out of the window though. They only broke UEFA rules, not PL/FL, so those are still credible (as much as they were). And in terms of UEFA rules it's saying you can break them but you have to keep it hidden for long enough...
I don't think this is going to result in the big free for all a lot of people are expecting.

Lovely.

I absolutely loved Big Jack. Total gold as a pundit too. "Paulo Soooze"

I don't have an issue with us being involved in the original group as it was all pre lockdown. Assuming the CAS date wouldn't have been earlier in a none Covid world then the team who finished 7th wouldn't have known when they were Europe and the team in 8th if they were at all until a couple of weeks before they would have been in qualifiers. We would have had to postpone our trip to the US for instance if we were one of them. Newcastle though [emoji23]

Those left in now just look jealous. City have bent and broken every FFP rule going, but I personally don't believe expenditure outside of borrowing should be included anyway and they've done a hell of a lot for that area of the City

Aye, that was desolate wasteland before the ground was built (albeit they didn't build it). Shitheap of an area.

Is Newcastle's objection generated from Steve Bruce by any chance, he has got form for this.

I may be completely wrong, but it seems to me there is a mutual respect between Man City and us (or at least an admiration of them by us)

For my 2 pence worth, I understand the spirit of why FFP was introduced, but its just flawed on so many levels that it punishes the smaller ambitious clubs, whilst leaving the large revenue generators at a massive advantage. To bring back a true competition you would have to go back to days of a maximum wage across all Leagues. This of course would never happen and nor do I believe it would benefit the game in the slightest and I'm not 100% that even then it would work.

There is a genuine mutual respect and liking between them and us and many of them still want us to be the team that breaks into the Top 4 and gives the others a bloody nose though some of them have turned against us due to our alleged involvement in the 'Hateful 8', I think the majority though still like us. Understandably they loathe and detest The Rags (United) and The Dippers (Liverpool)

City fans are alright, they used to be proper deluded though. "Yeah man, Kinkladze is better than Scholes". He's not though, is he.

Yeah friend of mine is a long term City season ticket holder (and brother of a particularly shit footballer) - they've been through some proper shit to get where they are now, hope they can enjoy it. And if it annoys Utd & Liverpool all the better.

As some have said the intentions of FFP are fair enough to prevent rogue owners who don’t pay their bills but beef up the squad with big signings ie Malaga and leave the club with a huge financial hole to gap.
Think it’s blatantly obvious that Man City owners intentions for the club and wider community are very good.
People say what if they get bored or stop investing? For starters as long as bills are payed its not the end of the world. Or what if oil prices drop etc all a lot of what ifs.
Even if they get bored they’d sell the club I doubt for one minute they would just be abandoned, the big issue with FFP is at the lower end of the scale with Rogue owners like Dale at Bury, Anderson at Bolton or the guy who use to own Charlton.

don't know enough about what has failed here but it sounds like the case must have had some serious flaws.
it's been forever that the big clubs seemingly have a grip on rule setting. i'd agree the FFP seems to work better in trying to stop clubs overspending and going bust than in ever establishing a level playing field. they should change the name as it doesn't uphold fairness.
and it seems hypocritical to me that its other huge clubs with huge resources and little interest in FFP who are doing the complaining here.
i don't recall Chelsea or Utd ever worrying about level playing fields when they were challenging for titles. how much did chelsea have to pay for their first prem league title?
glad we are not whinging about this. that's not to say something can't be said about having clear rules that apply to all and are considered for the good of fair competiton, but rather that than picking on one specific case.

Kings Lynn FC getting pelters for charging £575 for a season ticket.

Admittedly admission is probably 95% of their income but even so, that price is insane.

Andre Schurrle retired today at the age of 29. Sounds like he's been going through some mental health problems since signing for Dortmund a few years ago.

That's a shame, I thought he was a very talented player. Liked him at Chelsea and never got why he was swapped for Cuadrado. Wish him all the best for the future.
