The Football News Thread 2017/18 - everything not Wolves

The cup was split into Seeded teams and unseeded teams.

Due to where we finished in the League last season and how many teams above us are in the 2nd round we went into the unseeded pot. So the teams on each side are split to give an even balance to North and South. As we are Midlands based we were used to balance the Southern part of the draw. Thats the reasoning behind it but you would think Newport would get South and we would be North but the draw was a confused cluster $#@! anyway.

Thanks.

I have a suspicion not qualifying for the Champions League could turn out to be a catalyst for a very good Arsenal season, provided they go out of the Europa early enough. Seems in recent years that playing so many games in a season has hobbled some of the better teams and made it easier for others without those games to play (Leicester, Tottenham, even United to an extent) to break into the top four, and even make unexpected title challenges.

Of course Arsenal always go out of Europe in the early knockout rounds so whether there'll be that much of a difference, idk...

Arsenal need to win the thing. Too much competition to give away the easiest route into the CL. You can play reserves for half the competition and only need to get for the QFs

Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for five games for pushing the referee during Real Madrids game against Barcelona.

Will that ban be for all Spanish games or just Super Cup? (or whatever lasts nights game was). Only ask as Modric was banned last night due a red he picked up 3 years ago and the ban was only for that competition

1 game ban for the red card (Super Cup only)
4 game ban for pushing the ref (applies to La Liga games)

This sort of thing does my head in. Grown adults going crying to the police because a football manager has given them a bit of stick back after getting dogs abuse.

Reminds me of that woman on WM after the Walsall game.

I hope they all get warnings for wasting police time.

Abel Hernandez ruled out for six months after surgery on a ruptured Achilles.

Oof. Wildly painful, that.

The Draw for the 3rd Round of the League Cup will take place in Beijing on Thursday. If anyone fancies catching the draw (and the 2 done so far have been clusterfuck confusionballs) you can watch it online (via Twitter) at.....4.15 AM.

The Scotland squad really is shite . It may just be me but wtf?

Goalkeepers: Jordan Archer (Millwall), Craig Gordon (Celtic), Allan McGregor (Hull City)

Defenders: Ikechi Anya (Derby County), Christophe Berra (Heart of Midlothian), Grant Hanley (Newcastle United), Russell Martin (Norwich City), Charlie Mulgrew (Blackburn Rovers), Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), Kieran Tierney (Celtic), Steven Whittaker (Hibernian)

Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Celtic), Barry Bannan (Sheffield Wednesday), Scott Brown (Celtic), Tom Cairney (Fulham), Darren Fletcher (Stoke City), James Forrest (Celtic), Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth), James McArthur (Crystal Palace), John McGinn (Hibernian), Matt Phillips (West Bromwich Albion), Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United), Robert Snodgrass (West Ham United)

Forwards: Steven Fletcher (Sheffield Wednesday), Leigh Griffiths (Celtic), Chris Martin (Derby County), Steven Naismith (Norwich City)

Baz is unlucky he plays in the one position where they actually have 2 good players

It is pretty poor. There are some decent players in their though. Tierney is a fantastic talent. And Celtic have got quite a few coming through their academy which is extremely highly rated. They've got the young Dembele too(under 15) but I think he's going to play for England.

That is just silly. Why make the draw for an English club competition in another country?

The answer to that question is pretty much the same as most in football these days - Money

1st round draw was done (badly) in Hong Kong. Sponsor is an Asian company and I guess with the big teams joining they think their fans over there give a shit.

Surely they realise that most teams put out their second string in the league cup, so l am not sure what the interest would be. Though thinking about it, Liverpool and Manchester United have a very large fan base in the Far East, so I suppose there could be some interest.

The meltdown on twitter in reaction to it is quite funny I think, I couldn't really care less where or how the draw is done!

In other news, Mark Sampson is in hot water. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/21/eni-aluko-england-manager-mark-sampson-ebola If these allegations are true, and they seem to be to me, he won't be in a job for long. Which means to national team managers will have been sacked within a year of each other for issues away from the pitch. FA are a shambles sometimes aren't they?

Ought to be fired if that's true.

Lucas Digne has been named as one of the injured in the Barcelona van attack last week.

Rooney has retired from International Football.

Looks like he was going to get a call up but turned it down
