The Football News Thread 2017/18 - everything not Wolves

I think clock stoppage is probably the simplest solution to "time wasting" strategies a la Cardiff on Saturday.
Simplest solution was the shite ref should have booked the keeper the second time he did it.

He never did it for England when it counted. Should've been retired after South Africa

Hold up. You would have ditched Wayne Rooney from international duty when he was 24 years old? Directly after a World Cup where we had Peter Crouch and Emile Heskey in the squad as alternative options? Coming off the back of a season where he scored 34 goals for United?

Come on Captain Hindsight.

He only played two games in Euro 2012 :icon_lol:

I meant 2010 :icon_lol: but it was probably repeated every two years

Fuck was it seven years ago?! That was probably the last tourney I really gave a shit about #ficklepenis

You'll get back on board if we ever turn good one day ;)

Anyway it's all well and good to say that we should have ditched Rooney given that he never did much at any tournaments after Euro 2004 (although he wasn't *that* bad in 2014 and 2016) but you sort of have to offer an alternative. Darren Bent was not one. This was an era when Jay Bothroyd, Kevin Davies, Carlton Cole and Bobby Zamora were picking up caps. And as I say, he was 24 in 2010. He was a Champions League final scorer in 2011. You just wouldn't write him off at that point, not a hope.

He fell out of favour when we did have better options and he'd demonstrably declined, that's the way it works.

Not many of these England 'legends' do it when it matters though and that's the problem. Since I've been watching England (1986) I reckon players who have performed well in at least 2 major tournaments would be:

Lineker (86. 90)
Gazza (90,96)
Shearer (96,98)
Owen (98, 04)
Neville (always!)
Ashley Cole (ditto)
Campbell (98, 02, 04)

Not a very long list after 31 years.

Rio was class in 2002 and 2006.

Yep.

We had the best defence in the world for a good few years and had nothing to show for it. Just remembered James was the keeper for some of that time though so maybe not such a mystery.

We should have won 2004, i am still gutted rooney got injured in that one because we would have won it IMO. 2006 was a missed opportunity but owen and Rooney just weren't fit

Tottenham currently crying as they get Real Madrid and Dortmund in their Champ Leagues Group

Ironic that Chelsea/Spurs have the toughest draws. The rest who finished below them in the league have it much easier.
