Anybody hear the row between these 2 on Talksport this morning? Wilkins and Custis arguing about the keeper Alvarez on Rashford's free kick. Wilkins tells Custis he has no footballing knowledge and Custis asking who the hell he (Wilkins) thinks he is. 20 minutes in...

Just lately there seems to be an annoying tendency amongst old pros on Talksport thinking that their opinion is more valid than anyone else's because they've played the game
Talksport is just tabloid radio these days. Very few of their ex pro pundits offer colour or insight, Danny Murphy probably being the exception that springs to mind. The likes of Parlour and Quinn can barely string a sentence together. You read analysis on here which is light years ahead of anything they could muster.

'Quinny' is thick as pig shit and is another one who bangs the 'I've played football at a high level so know more than you' drum. Brazil used to have people like David Ginola and Neil Warnock on who did offer good insight but these days it's more 'Quinny' and 'The Remford Pele'.

Been like it for as long as I can remember. 'I played at x level therefore I know more than you'. It's bollocks and always has been. In Michael Calvin's book 'Living on the Volcano' there's a brilliant chapter with Mark Hughes about this very subject and Hughes sums up well when he says, playing one position teaches you how to play that position, being a manager and coach you need to know about all positions not just one.

That's a great book BTW.

It is. As is the 'nowhere men' (about scouting , would be good to get your perception Johnny). I've just bought his latest book which is about academies

Nowhere Men is superb, I agree. Not read his new one - the last thing of his I read was Barton's book that he co-wrote.

Ray Wilkins basically saying he knows more than the Celta Vigo keeper and the goalkeeping coach who sets up that defensive screen match after match to suit his own team and his opponents strengths and faults.
I doubt Wiikins had done his homework on the keeper or how and why he does his role.

It's brilliant and absolutely spot on. Many of the people in there I know and two of them I have worked with and one of them for. The analysis sheet that he talks about I'm proud to say I helped develop further at Palace to include further specifics.

The bits on youth football are eye opening though as I had no idea about them.

He also highlights something that eventually wore me down and that was the way people are treated by football clubs, be it scouts, coaches or staff (not players) and I think football in general has a long way to go in treating people outside of the players. Having said that, I absolutely loved being a nowhere man and when the kids are grown up I'd love to do it again.

I think Calvin is a brilliant author.

Can't believe I've just heard Eddie Howe say that the Harry Arter tackle was robust and he won the ball.

Sums up everything that makes Bournemouth in the top three clubs I really REALLY don't like now.

Four years ago I didn't give them a thought, but their recent ways are truly fucking repulsive in so many ways

Hartlepool relegated from L2 despite beating Doncaster. Massive helping hand from Dave Jones there.

At the other end, Portsmouth are the Champions.

Hartlepool will not find it easy next season. The National league seems to get tougher every season.

Plenty of celebrating up here when Newport scored that late winner ;)

Swansea players will cover the cost of 3,000 away tickets for the club's match at Sunderland next Saturday. A superb gesture by them.

It is. It's actually surprising/disappointing that it doesn't happen more often. It'd probably cost the 18 in the match day squad about £8k apiece, and I'm sure there's probably some creative tax shenanigans they can do to even get that down

England have announced their squad for the FIFA U20 World Cup.

For those who have a bout of insomnia, the local football team "Chattanooga FC" play their 1st cup match of the season tonight against the Charlotte Eagles...

May be of interest as both teams are "Amateurs" but consist of quite a few pros from the UK... Live streaming on ussoccer.com, should anyone be interested! :)
