I watched blade runner for the first time the other day and my overriding thought was that it was extremely odd. Didn't hate it but couldn't work out why it's loved so much but I guess it's to do with when it was made

I've read the book a couple of times but for some reason I've never watched Blade Runner. I really should watch it sometime.

I'm the same. I thought the original was a whole bag of meh. Didn't hate it or love it either.

I watched Mission Impossible Rogue Nation last night on Netflix. Genuinely surprised by how good it was. Better than the Bond films since Goldeneye. The plot was really good, and the script and performances were excellent. The car chase with the motorbikes was fantastic and you could actually see what was going on in the fight scenes.

Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed it, and he was the guy who wrote The Usual Suspects. He also did Edge Of Tomorrow and Jack Reacher with Cruise which I enjoyed.

I'm actually looking forward to the next Mission Impossible next year now!

Glad I'm not alone, though I also failed to see the merits of Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine.

Eternal Sunshine is one of my favourite ever films. Fight Club is pretty ace too.

Blade Runner 2049. If you are a fan of Sci-fi then I can't see how you would not enjoy this film. It's excellent. Although I would imagine a film that is better seen at the cinema than waiting to see it on the little screen. Some may find the length of it a bit long, but I didn't find this so. If you watched the original and enjoyed it, then most of you I'm sure will find 2049 equally as entertaining. It's ace, and so are the Cast.

It's ok - I know I'm in the minority on these two - give me Ben Hur, Gladiator, or Rocky, and I'd be happy.

Not a film but there is a short story (which is being made into a film by the way) which is part of the Black Mirror series called The Entire History of You. It's a very dark but thought provoking drama well worth a look especially if you have been watching some of Phillip K Dicks recent offerings.

Really enjoyed it highly recommended on my part.

It can be a bit tricky if it comes up when I'm in the cinema watching a different film and I have to avert my gaze and hum to myself...

i've seen it too now. It's decent enough and I didn't think it was over long considering it's 2 and half hours. I'd have liked more immersion in the world itself. the main story? bit crap, didn't find the point of it or the conflict around it convincing. on the other hand I really liked the side story of the main character's existence and I'd have preferred a story just around that.

I'd agree with that. (It seemed to have a major plot hole too which I won't put here).
I was happy to wallow in the beauty of it, though. Definitely needs to be watched on the big screen.

I watched The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas last night.

Very moving, but I couldn't help but think the ending is really really bad. I'll use spoilers just in case:

 

Of course, it's very moving. It's tragic - but it's completely stupid, far fetched and ridiculous to the extent that it ruins what had been a very powerful build up. The timing of it is badly done, and it ruins any kind of impact for me because all I could think of was that of all the times he could have dug under the fence and help find his friend's dad, he had to pick that exact 10 minute interval that just so happens to be the moment his whole hut is bundled into the gas chambers!

Except the last 10/15 minutes it's a very sad story of childhood innocence surrounded by such evil and cruelty - I know it's based on a book but I do think it's spoiled by the ending.
