The Film Thread

I picked up a copy of Dunne some time ago, is it worth a read or does it suffer from being of its time?

I'm a massive fan of Richard Dunne but it didn't really work for me. His time at Aston Villa is completely ignored which is unforgivable really.

Garry Nelson's 'Left Foot Forward' on the other hand, actually improves with every read.

No the books are not really reflective of when they were written - I've read probably at least 5 or 6 times and up until yesterday had no idea it was first published in the 60s

The first book is an absolute true classic of soft science fiction. It doesn't have all the having to have everything scientifically possible in some imagined futuristic period like hard science fiction does. More like space opera really. Which is hardly surprising considering its age (although an interesting comparison with 2001 which was written in the same year).

Watched Joker last night. Phenomenal performance from Phoenix. Totally engaging and horribly unnerving all at the same time.

I decided to have a go at a run of music related films, some I have seen before and others that are new to me, so far I have perused Walk the line, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocket Man, Yesterday and tonight will be Blinded by the Light, next week The Rutles, A Star is Born and Judy. I'm saving Spinal Tap naturellement.. always keep the best for last.

I also watched a quirky little Australian film about aussie rules football called Extra-time. It is really good. If you enjoyed things like Troop Zero and Hunt for the Wilderpeople might be your cup of cocoa.

Don't forget Mighty Wind, Squeeze [emoji16]

The best Aussie Rules movie is "The Club".

I watched Ray last night as its one I missed first time round. That was good. Jamie Foxx probably deserved his Oscar for it.

If you haven't seen Great Balls of Fire add that to the list, Dennis Quaid is fucking brilliant in it.

The best Australian film EVER is Picnic at Hanging Rock. I may have to dig that out later.

Thank you Booz, Bear and Machin - I will add those to my list :tiphat:

Rabbit-Proof Fence is awesome as is Animal Kingdom. Big shout out to Walkabout, 10 Canoes and Snowtown too.

Rabbit Proof Fence is an absolutely brutal film. Emotionally exhausting.

If you like music films/biopics etc, Whats Love Got To Do With It is worth a look

Just a mention of one of my favourite films that I rewatched the other night - Stranger Than Fiction.

Will Ferrell's best film and performance by a long way. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson were also very good in it.
