The Film Thread

Yeah I thought the Joker was brilliant, very powerful, very dark. Its a story of the decent into madness (or further into) rather than just another plastic baddie who appears in so many superhero films.

Agreed, I'm not a fan of the Marvel or DC films, but thought Joker was excellent.

Last night I watched I believe in Miracles and Howard's Way, both very nostalgic pieces. The Forest one is a better made more polished film and shows Clough at his best, but I remember the Everton side more. That mid 80s team was my favourite none Wolves club side.

Some of the players now have strange hybrid accents. Stevens Aussie, Steven Scottish, PVDH South African. Kevin Sheedy who was my favourite player in the team has enjoyed the last 30 years looking at the size of him.

I'd recommend both, but only really the latter if you remember the side. You can rent both on Amazon Prime

Watched Chef last night, starring, written and directed by Jon Favreau. Such a lovely, charming film. But don't watch it if you're hungry!

I've been meaning to watch that for ages but forgot about. Will have to remember to watch it sometime this week!

Jon Favreau? Is he the guy who was the millionaire boyfriend of Monica in friends who took up cage fighting?

Yep, also Happy Hogan in the Marvel films. But also a writer/director starting with the excellent Swingers.

He directs a lot of stuff nowadays. Marvel included.

The Call of the Wild.

If you can get past the very obvious CGI dog, it's a decent yarn.
Doesnt quite do justice to the book but that would be almost impossible as the book is a classic

Isn't this latest offering something like the sixth or seventh film made based on the book?

Ah gotcha, yep been made a number of times before, I had high hopes for this version, but I'm not sure it would ever be a novel that could be done justice in a film adaption.

Never got into Dune, I'll have to give it a go.

The books, especially the first 3, are exceptional.

6 by Brian Herbert. Shed loads by his son from his Dad’s seemingly never ending notes.

There are three prequels by Brian Herbert set thousands of years before Dune. Then another set a few hundred years later. And then a further set in the immediate run up that give some character stuff.
The it is Dune itself by Frank Herbert
Another interim book by Brian
Dune Messiah by Frank
Another interim by Brian
Children of Dune by Frank

Final three original books by Frank
Two books by Brian which tie up the cliffhanger left by Franks death and finish the original saga.

And that misses one other series by Brian which I think is sequel but I haven’t even scan read that.

I could dig them out and give you the exact reading order. Or you could just read Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune to start off.

I tried to read all the Brian Herbert books, but failed - they are like mushrooms.

Dune, Dune Messiah & Children of Dune are just brilliant. I'm really hoping this film does it justice and kicks off a series.
