The Film Thread

Inspired by the talk on the B&W movie thread, I rewatched 12 Angry Men the other night. Such a brilliant film. It's a bit stagey and some of the dialogue's a bit clunky but to do so much with what's basically 12 men sitting in a room for 90 minutes is amazing. And would come quite high in a Sweatiest Movie Ever poll. (Far behind outright winner Cool Hand Luke, of course.)

Just rewatched this - a classic now, but not a commercial sucess when it came out originally

Yes - really. And I love the original. I thought it really captured the style of the original (with obviously a budget of about 1,000,000% more) and was a superb film in its own right.

Mad Max: Fury Road is brilliant.

Also - I saw Legend last night. Tom Hardy is absolutely ace in it - well worth watching just for him. But frustratingly, there isn't anything else that's particularly memorable. Hardy steals absolutely every scene he is in - no-one else gets close, it's not a particularly well cast film except the lead. And I dunno - it felt a bit 'safe' to me. So in that respect, it was a let down.

Really enjoyed The Big Short, lays a lot of the truth about the World banking crisis on the table.

Don't mention 12 Angry Men, Lemonjelly will be giving me grief as I haven't got round to watching it yet!

Yeah, I saw this at the cinema, and whilst Hardy is great, what I didn't like was the film was a bit sensationalist, and used poetic licence in the wrong places. On a related note I've just finished a superb book on the Krays.

The 33. Those 33 men deserved an unforgetable film made about them and their long ordeal trapped underground for so long. The film for me is instantly forgetable.

I remember following this on the news when it happened. Amazed at how they were all still alive, and all got out alive.

Yeah I didn't think much to The 33. Distinctly average.

Reminded me of an old Marty Feldman sketch i once saw..."fight fight fight...no!... run away run away"
Except it went on for (what felt like) 16 hours.

It's a good story but not really worthy of a film IMO. Some blokes get trapped and then they get rescued (and we already know they survived), unless you go making stuff up for dramatic effect then I'm not sure where you can go with it.

Going to give Legend a go in the next week I think.

Yeah I think you're right. Seeing the actual live footage when they were being rescued eclipsed any sort of drama the film was able to portray.

Legend reminded me a bit of Gangs of New York in that it's a pretty average film that just so happens to have a very charismatic, watchable lead. Fortunately, it's not as long as GONY.

127 hours by Danny Boyle was pretty damn good, and it only involved 1 person.

Although admittedly I was surprised that it was so good as the premise of one person being trapped for a long time doesn't scream classic script material

I watched Amy last night.

So very very sad. She was a huge talent, and it was great to see so much early footage of her. I always preferred her first album Frank to Back to Black. I can understand why her father is so angry at the film makers because he doesn't come out of it well at all, but the way she self destructs in such a short space of time really was quite shocking. It's a very good documentary.

Yeah, it was a good film about her, and as you say, very sad to see such a talent wasted, that footage of her being whisked out of her gaff to play a gig in Croatia during a binge was quite shocking.

Yer man Blake Fielder needs to be strung up by his bollocks for what he led her to.

I remember seeing her on Jools Holland in the early days. She looked healthy, she played the guitar and her songs were good even back then. Shame she went downhill so badly.

Criminal Activities. Only 90 minutes long but this is worth a watch. Clever in places, funny in others, eye candy in Travolta for the ladies ( bit of shagging in a car for the blokes) and a great twist at the end.
