The F1 Thread

The livery is too busy for my liking.

They've clearly gone for the old 70's style red/white job, but the shape of the modern car doesn't pander to the colour scheme as well as the old cars. It just looks odd.

Saw some footage on SSN of Hamilton putting the new Merc through its paces at Silverstone. Only fleeting stuff, but it looks almost identical to last season's/

Agreed on too much white on the Ferrari. Looks like a Marlboro McClaren.

Haas's livery. I quite like it personally.

Agreed. Quali was the one thing that didn't really need changing.

Ridiculous changes to qualifying.

Only a Proposal right now, has to be approved.

A lot of voices against it, so hopefully another shite idea put in the bin.

It's a fucking absurd idea. It'll be complete chaos if it gets the go ahead.

F1 needs to bin the gimmicks. It's getting absurd now.

Hmmmm - it would also make quali take about a decade. There are 22 cars in the field. You are planning to eliminate the slowest on each run. So that is 21 full pelt quali laps to decide the pole, rather than probably 4 or 5 now (3 if you are in a Merc).

Plus, after each quali lap there needs to be time to sort out who is the slowest and eliminate them. Say an average lap is around 1 minute 30. You need to add 2 minutes for the out lap and 2 minutes for the warm down lap. So that is 5 minutes 30 per section. Then a couple more minutes for a splash of fuel and new boots (plus no idea how this would effect the number of tyres allowed in a weekend, as you could use 22 sets of ultra-soft) so a total time between runs of 7 minutes 30 seconds. Multiply by 21 runs. 150 minutes and 30 seconds for a qualifying session, assuming everything goes smoothly. And that assumes everyone on track at the same time for the first runs which just won't happen.

You looking at a minimum of three hours. And frankly most of the audience will only want to watch the last forty minutes.

Value for money innit.

Sort out the race day. First thing to action - Tyres. Stop having Pirelli make them so they fall apart in the slightest bit of turbulent air

Mileage covered in the first 2 and half days testing

Insane from the Mercedes but also nice to see McLaren being able to put in the work this year.

Looks like everyone has done pretty well so far, especially compared to last year

That's not how it would work. The cars would be fueled for the entire session. Q1 is 16 mins and at certain cutoffs the cars would be knocked out in order based on the timing screens when the time came. If cars are on a fast lap but haven't completed it then tough, too late. It wouldn't take any extra time.

I guess it would keep all the cars on the track at virtually all times, but it sounds a bit false and too hectic for the fans to follow properly.

Q1 is something like 7th min and slowest car is out. Every 90 seconds after that the slowest is out until the end
Q2 does similar until 10 cars are left
Q3 same again which would leave 2 cars on track with 90 seconds to go.

So would they be allowed to fuel for the race or would those in Q3 need to have their boots and fuel load for that bit?

It would be the same as last season for fuel and tyres. The only difference is when cars are eliminated and given their grid spot.

Okay...

So I am in a Manor (say, or a Haas). I am not going to make quali 3 so I fuel for 3 laps as the entire session. Fire off one lap that gets me to 11th and then I can sit with my feet up while everyone else with higher fuel loads to start tries to beat it?
