The F1 Thread

Couple of minor niggles. Compared to last year that is a lot of mileage for most of the teams.

Okay...

So I am in a Manor (say, or a Haas). I am not going to make quali 3 so I fuel for 3 laps as the entire session. Fire off one lap that gets me to 11th and then I can sit with my feet up while everyone else with higher fuel loads to start tries to beat it?
Presume so. All about trying to mix it up apparently

The thing is I think qualification did need a revamp of sorts. Because of the reduced grid size last season, unless someone really messed up or their car was broken, it was pretty easy to predict who was going out in Q1 and Q2 bar a couple of either/or shouts. Then if a Findia/Sauber/Lotus managed to get into Q3 they often didn't even bother going out to set a time because what's the point, they were going to finish 9th/10th anyway.

This confusing mess isn't the answer though, they've ripped it straight from Burnout Revenge for a start.

New format confirmed for Australia. Though the sporting regs have still to be written for it in case there are red flags etc.

– Q1

16 minutes duration
After 7 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2

– Q2

15 minutes duration
After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3

– Q3

14 minutes duration
After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
2 drivers left in final 1 minute 30 seconds

Nope. Same tyre rules as discussed previously.

I'm willing to give it a chance. Q1 and Q2 were largely a waste anyway.

Unlimited tyres may have helped as then there would be loads of racing.

James Allen seems to think it will spice things up a bit and see more bigger drivers going out on occasion.

Of course it will. They won't want to do too many runs to save the tyres but then they make a mistake or they get stuck in traffic and then they are out.

Whereas before they could go at half pace and still be guaranteed Q3

looking forward to the australian GP on sunday morning

The Renault looks fantastic. Proper colour scheme. Not quite the ultimate traditional nod to the days of Rene Arnoux and early Prost but bloody good to look at.

I am also really looking forward to the season getting underway at the weekend. Should be interesting. Hoping Ferrari are really competitive against the Mercs.

P1
1) Lewis
2) Kyvatt
3) Ricciardo

P2
1) Lewis
2) Hulkenburg
3) Kimi

Rosberg smashed out in P2. Not a lot to take from the sessions though as it rained and messed up times/schedules.

Trying to explain the new qualifying format to my 6 year olds and why there were no cars on track at the end...

Given up, but at least Lewis wiped the floor with Rosberg.

The new qualifying was shocking and I expect it to be reverted to the old style by the next race.
