The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (2019 version) - 1970 - present

The first season I can remember is 01-02 and I don’t remember watching Pollet at all

He didn't play much under DJ. Should have though as he was better than Fat Manc Butler.

Really wanted Shirtliff and de Wolf in but no space

Given the age profile on here then the players from the 70's are not going to get in (& even though I was there then if we are going 3 - 5 - 2 then can only probably include 3 from then in my choices), but if people had seen Frank Munro in his pomp then he would have been in anyone's top 3 - he was that good.

Tended to play as the left CH in a back four, but was a good enough player to have covered anywhere across that back line. Would have been a really significant upgrade on Bennett last season (& probably better than the other 2 as well)

I really liked Shirtliff and De Wolf, but both were just better versions of mountfield and madden - we really went through a stage of playing old knackered CHs, i think thats why so many of us rate Dean Richards. Him and the perma-croc Williams were the first CHs who were not knackered and older than sin.

Ah - that side with Mountfield at the back, and Paul Birch perming it up in midfield.

Halcyon days...

Although he was well past his best, thought Mountfield was still class

Mountfield was ok until he got his weird illness.

Shirtliff was class until he got injured vs Millwall.

De Wolf is massively romanticised because he was a mega geezer and a good footballer (a novelty for centre halves then). Turned like a skip.

De Wolf lost the love though when he publicly refused to play for the reserves on his return from injury. Cant imagine the abuse he would have got doing that if Social Media existed at that time.

I didn't really warm to DeWolf, always thought he wouldn't have got a tenth of the love if he had a short back and sides and was from Rotherham rather than Rotterdam

He sort of had a point. He absolutely dominated Dion Dublin in his last hurrah vs Cov, then two weeks later Taylor asked him to play for the stiffs. Made no sense, but obviously there are ways and means of making your point.

Realistically bar that one game he was done after his injury.

Guess Taylor was testing his attitude. Quite a few players have said Taylor would do things to test there commitment etc. Poor response and you were done.

At least De Wolf clearly still has a lot of time for us as a club. I like that. Plus he just looked ridiculously cool.

Hey - he knew Gladon liked curry, and he heard that Penn Tandoori were having hard times. It was a civic-minded move, rather than football related.
