The Blame Game

Im just stating the way I saw it.
Jonny cant see into the future to know it was gonna be a goal. The cross wasnt that dangerous, 5 on 2 in the box, we had boly, donk, coady, bennett and doc in the box, easily our top 5 aerial players. They had mounie (blocked by coady), and gray on the far post blocked by two of ours. Just shit luck bolys attempted knock went straight to gray.

we've only had 3 clean sheets since oct 6, the last being west ham over a month ago. get our 3rd when rui is subbed out. coincidence?

:stirthepot:

Other than his double fumble in the first ten minutes, Ruddy may as well have brought a book out with him on Saturday

I mean yeah you're not wrong.

I read today that this is our best season for clean sheets in the top flight since 1983/4. Given what happened that season that surprised me.

Your going to hate me for this, however it's only a little gripe. Neves running at Hazard at 100 mph instead of jockey him across did I think cost us the three points. Again it's a little gripe but it was a school ground type of thing to do.

Certainly over committed, if he'd just restrained himself a little once he got towards the edge of the box he gives Hazard something to think about and maybe does enough to prevent or at least delay the shot somewhat but by charging in like he did it was so easy for a player as nimble as Hazard to simply side step him and pick his spot.

At least he made the effort. That's more than Traore did, who was the nearest to Hazard when he got the ball, but just let him run with it.

Quick someone unlock the Traore thread..

Traore was watching another player was he not? Willian maybe, pretty sure he and another Wolves player were drawn wide out of the box towards two Chelsea players who took the quick corner and then when the ball was played to Hazard that drew another player from the box as you would expect.

Looked to me that Traore was watching MGW who was challenging Willian, the man with the ball, while the 2nd player was outside MGW on the wing. When the ball was passed inside to Hazard, he was directly in front of Traore about a couple of yards away. Neves was miles away and I think he realised that it was Traore who had ended up being the nearest defender so shot across the box to try and challenge for the ball. Hazard skipped to the right and hit that fantastic shot that curled into the bottom corner.

I just felt it was unfair to criticize Neves, who at least tried to get to Hazard while Traore was the nearest man and didn't.

Being the closest to something doesn't automatically make it their job. Say Traore goes toward Hazard and the ball is played back wide, then Chelsea are two against one out there and could get into a very dangerous position. In that situation I'd always be expecting an extra player to press out from the box to shut down the player with the ball. The principle of it is correct it's just Neves' execution, he over commits and as soon as a player with Hazard's ability spots that then it's child's play for him. Can't fault the effort to get out there but with a little more thought to the approach he'd have been much more effective, it's something Neves needs to work on now he's generally the anchorman of that midfield three.

Neves was so pissed off with himself after the goal because he knew he was at fault. I thought he was defensively fantastic yesterday and apart from the last 5/10 minutes was decent on the ball too but he got it wrong closing down Hazard like he did, he got too close but he knew it and it will help him in the future.

Personally I thought Traore was to blame for Huddersfield's goal as well

Yes, even the ones when he wasn't on the pitch. Boo that man.

If there is some blame yesterday then it is Neves though it's marginal. Most players don't beat him there, it's Eden Hazard man.

No chance for Rui with the way the ball dips and bounces.

Many attackers at this level would beat a player diving in like Neves did, Hazard is good but Neves made it easy.

Neves should have done better but Traore came out of position allowing for the wide open setup. Hazard open on the corner of the box, which had been a marked area for the rest of the game.

He shouldn't have been moved in that deep, yes?
