The Blame Game

Watching the replay of the second goal again it's more a clusterfuck than I thought first time around. Lamela causes a big problem, no-one is marking him at all when the ball comes down Wolves' right hand side then when the play switches he bursts into the box giving 3 men up against the three centre halves and they just sort themselves out at all. Then when the ball does come in Son breaks into the box two with no-one from midfield anywhere near him, so they're effectively 4 on 3 against the centre halves when the ball gets back into the box. Doherty at least tries to get back in at the last minute but there's too much distance to make up and the central midfielders seem completely unaware of the issue.

Giving the third to the back 5 collectively. Rui making the save , great but it goes into a danger area. Everyone else reacts too slow and Kane scores.

Pin the tail on the donkey for number 3

Got caught out as we pressed the initial goal kick, which they cocked up. Then Lloris launched it and then they won the flick on (Coady) then Rui (at fault on the first too, with others) made a complete dog's dinner of the initial shot. Doherty and Bennett for the 2nd? Only saw that in the ground.

Boly for the first.
Bennett I think for the second, but I'm still not absolutely sure having watched it a few times.
Boly again for the third is most culpable for me, but tbh none of the three covered themselves in glory. I'm not totally convinced by Patricio's attempt to save Kane's follow up either. He didn't spread. Kinda looked like he'd given up on it.

Whilst Boly was poor on the their 3rd goal. The law about having a retake if the ball doesn't come out of the box is bullshit (assuming that's what it was) and needs changing. Our high pressing got penalised there and Lloris simply quickly launches it and they get a goal.

It wasn't a goal kick though. The linesman flagged either for offside or a foul against Raul. So it shouldn't have been pulled up for not going out of the box, unless it was Costa not being 10 yards.

Indirect free kick still needs to leave the box I believe

1st goal for me Jonny and Cav switch off and allow the run of Lamela inside. Boly perhaps comes away too early but criminal from the other two to let him just run off of them that easily

2nd goal Bennett but also no pressure on the cross from nearest player which I assume was Jonny.

3rd goal is a really good header from Kane to win it from Lloris's kick, but Coady and Boly shouldn't switch there really. Coady recovers it really well and is unlucky that the ball comes back off Lamela's foot so he can pull it back to Kane. I thought Patricio did as much as he could, even parried it really wide but no one was quick enough to follow it in. I know we were slightly unlucky that we had set up to press but you can't allow our back three to be that far apart from the rest of the team from a dead ball, I think Nuno will be more annoyed with our defensive structure as a whole there.

I did wonder at the time if RP could have come for the cross on the 2nd. It was a great cross though.

Probably just goalkeeper technique that I’m not familiar with but with Kane’s second shot why did Patricio have his arms down by his side?

Last night was annoying because as good a team as Spurs are there were quite obvious errors on our part for all 3 goals.

Pretty sure they don't.

Cav at fault for the first as he's let Lamela run off him too easily, then Boly isn't quick enough to close him down. Jonny has Trippier outside of him so is defending the space between the two.

2nd is on Doc as Coady gets sucked into the near post, Bennett moves to mark Kane and Doc is ambling back and not picking up Moura quick enough.

The third is a mess once Kane wins the header, Coady and Boly fail to deal with Lamela and then Bennett fails to see Kane twice. You could also argue Voady not getting something on it as he runs behind Patricio.

That's why if your keeper fluffs a goal kick or free kick you run in the area to get it retaken as a defender.

Goal kicks yes but free kicks are clearly different and even Mike Dean got that wrong.

Dean was correct

"the Law designates another position (see Laws 3, 11, 12)
The ball:
must be stationary and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player
is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves except for a free kick to the defending team in their penalty area where the ball is in play when it is kicked directly out of the penalty area"
