Summer 2021 transfer window

I just think we have more pressing needs, Lou.

At least one centre half and a proper attacking CM (not a #10) for a start.

I'd happily sell Adama to fund some of that.

Nuno did an interview about Vitinha and said he needs to develop physically and "in duels" - I don't think they have any worries about him technically but he needs to add some bite to play in a midfield 2 in this country.

If there is money left over after addressing obvious deficiencies in the starting XI I'd happily sign RAN and Vitinha but I'll be mightily frustrated if signing them means we don't get another CH, an attacking midfielder and cover up front.

Have we had any indication of how the pandemic has affected us financially in terms of losses etc? We made a profit in the first season since promotion of course, and we basically broke even last summer in terms of transfers.

I don't think we need to be selling anyone to fund anything unless the pandemic has really severely hurt us. I'd be signing RAN, a centre back , a centre midfielder and an additional attacking option. Make a decision on Vitinha/WJ. We are already light in wide areas, if we sold Adama for example we'd need to sign two more attacking players.

The break even was because we had the huge loss from the promotion season sat in the FFP calculations. It isn’t now and that has to make a difference to our dosh available.

For: The Championship loss drops off this year in terms of FFP

Against: No gate income for an entire year (same for everyone of course)

Broadly speaking we can spend what we want but you want to target it properly. I don't think Rayan Ait-Nouri, Vitinha and Willian José is how I would choose to spend £60m+ at this point.

We didn't break even in the short-term. We paid most of the Fabio fee up front and deferred the Jota payments. That doesn't pose a problem from an FFP perspective, but does cashflow wise. So ultimately depends on how Fosun view that.

I think we know what RAN is now, depends on how you project his development. I wouldn't pay the money, you could get a competent back up to Jonny from the Championship or just bring Vinagre back. Vitinha needs to play, then we can make a judgement. We have a great chance to explore what we have with players and formations for the rest of the season. We need to do it.

WJ is too early to say.

Cash flow is an interesting point for sure. But nothing to stop us offering staggered payments for a really big deal.

Purely speculation on my part but with us largely breaking even (i think) on transfer fees coupled with our small capacity (and thus) much smaller matchday revenues than other clubs, losing the the Championship finances and an extra years TV money we wouldn't be too drastically hurt by it.

Edit: see TT's point.

Everton will have been hurt by it with their known money balancing act and losing 40k on the gate plus corporate, likewise Arsenal and especially Spurs who currently have a 1bn white elephant with no £2000 season ticket holders.

Anyone think Josh DaSilva would be worth the high fee Brentford would want for him?

Not sure if he will be on our radar but I am a big fan. If they didn't go up (they probably will) I reckon he'd be affordable too.

I saw that Thauvin is on a free from Marseille in the summer and Leicester are interested.

Calhanoglu at Milan too, but I'd imagine bigger fish will be after him, plus he wants well over £100k per week.

Someone like Jonas Hoffman at Gladbach could fit the bill too.

Bear loves his lightweight French midfielders, first Sanson and now Thauvin :D

No ta.

I'd definitely be taking RAN and Vitinha at £20m each - that'll look like a bargain in 3-5 years time, and they'll both be quality squad options even next season. Even as first cabs off the rank at full back and midfield they'll get plenty of football here without getting relied on too much and put under too much pressure. I could quite easily see Vitinha and Neves in a two, inside a couple of years. I think he's a beautiful footballer to watch, kind of Modric-y in how he finds space and takes the ball on the half turn, I think he's going to be some player.

Willian would have to do something pretty special to convince me to spend that sort of money at his age though

This will probably go down like a lead balloon, but in all honesty I think last summer's recruitment looks far less smart now than it was portrayed at the time.

Combine that with Nuno's visible difficulties moulding a coherent team out of the players already at his disposal this season, and I struggle to share the optimism of some that we're going to make three big, successful first team signings (two of which are to go straight in the first XI) this summer.

I don't think it's particularly negative. We haven't had a window that significantly improved the first eleven since the first one in the Premier League.
