Summer 2021 transfer window

Ruben Dias didn't happen as Benfica wanted an extortionate fee (they had sold Felix for insane amounts so didn't need the money), and Zinchenko I'll give you - when he was stalling after a bid was accepted we should have just moved on.

The difference with Botman is Lille NEED the money, but I don't know if he'd be keen on a move here.

it was more a case his release clause was £65m and we had to pay it one go, which obviously we couldn't do and no amount of sending Jorge in to tell them what to do helped change their minds and let us pay over 5 years.

They were probably in the position to do that though with rinsing Atletico for £100m+

Doesn’t matter what the specifics were. We still wasted our entire window chasing something that, most of us, could see wasn’t going to happen - and there are quite a few examples. I remember saying it was incredibly naive of Shi at the time and I was told by multiple people on here to get back in my box.

He (Shi) does seem to make the same mistakes time and time again. As I say, fingers crossed he’s learnt his lesson - but the fact we’ve entered the final week of the window (again) and we are still 3-4 players short of where we need to be, it doesn’t scream confidence.

I don't see a world where we sign three or four players this week, prices will be too hiked up - I'd be happy with just a CB at this stage (assuming Traore doesn't go).

Diop is about as realistic as my expectations will allow. With maybe a couple of kids from las palmas

You say this but how do you know so?

I doubt very much a club just wires over
£65m on the day.

IMO the Dias move was never on. As in we would have signed him but he was never going to come here. Purely used in the medie to get him a new contract IIRC

Did we?
How do we know how long we spent on it? Just because whelmers on Twitter are making up shit doesn't mean its true.
From what I remember we tried to sign him when we were in China and by the time we got back it was all over. Not sure if my memory is correct, we may have asked again when Benfica were knocked out of the CL (that might be my brain making that up though)

The one we spent too much time on was Zinchenko and we had him. All agreed and he then went all Curbishley on us and we ran out of time to get somone in. Should have pulled the plug a week before he did tbh.

Players not coming in right now for me is just showing how mental this window is, to go along side any concerns with our transfer team (Jeff and Jorge obvs). We have known Chelsea for example wanted Kounde for weeks and that whole deal now rests on West Ham signing Zouma. Not sure if its just being made more public this window but there seems to a whole host of deals that depend on players moving around and can involve numerous clubs and 1 fails and the whole chain breaks.

The generic rules on release clauses isn't it. You pay the whole thing in one go to end that contract.

Not so sure how it works in Portugal but Spain for example, the fee is paid to La Liga in one payment and then the contract is ripped up and the player is a free agent. Arsenal did it with Partey I think and of course PSG with Neymar.

EDIT - Should say buy out clause rather than release clause, 2 different things really. Don't think Buy Out clauses happen in the England due to our rules but common elsewhere

I don't think Botman is unrealistic, maybe against Sevilla but where else is he going to go and earn similar with first team opportunity like we'd offer? Caleta Car similarly. I don't think there is an issue of funds either, we haven't been affected as badly as most clubs by the pandemic and our payments for transfers are generally spread as per Football Ramble.

I suppose the Dias thing was that we could get a potential world class defender who was willing to come but we couldn't agree the fee. Based on the fact we hadn't signed a first team defender bar Vallejo since promotion makes me think that it wasn't seen as a priority for a minor upgrade by Nuno/board.

I think we'll see 3 in.

Vinicius is a banker to happen, Frankfurt broke down and he knows Lage, Jorge influence. Loan with obligation.
Botman/Car permanent.
Potentially a CM that hasn't been named at all yet and strikes out of the blue. Would be my unqualified prediction, which is likely to be miles out.

It'll be Vitinha for £20m

Straight out of FM I know but If I were Wolves I'd do a straight part exchange Traore for Ndombele.

Thats it, that's the deal.

. Yes, I appreciate we could be waiting for other deals to happen, but I’d rather we just got our business done. We shouldn’t be relying on anyone else (and really, we should have had the bulk of it done before the season started).
I have to say at this point, I’m not hugely confident and I think Bruno (and us) is going to be disappointed. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Good players that are moving clubs want to go to as big club as they can. They are going to wait and see what their options are and sadly we are nowhere near the top of their lists. So long as the option to join Liverpool, Sevilla or even West Ham is alive why would a player want to join Wolves unless we pay over the odds, and that way lies disaster in the long term?

Looks like kounde is going to Chelsea and Zouma to West ham. So I guess we get to pick either Diop or DCC

I have a slight concern that we are aiming too high and will end up settling for players the manager doesn’t want (or better still, not signing anyone at all). Remember Dias? Or Zinchenko? There are others too. We chased around all window for these players, missed out and seemingly had no back up plan. I really hope Shi has learnt his lesson, but I’m not confident.

Yes I’d love Ocampos here. And the lad Botman looks promising - but are they genuine options for us? We have under a week of the transfer window left. You want to go ugly early?

He's on 200k a week - there won't be anybody willing to touch him on that coupled with what Levy would demand.

Don’t know. That’s why I asked. Release clauses for me are just the amount that has to be “booked” for that player. Like our £18m for Traore, did we pay that all in one go?

If we really wanted him and he was going to come then we’d have just used Macquarie again. But we didn’t as the move never had any legs, IMO of course

It was my poor use of words there and I added an edit. Yeah release clauses are ones where if someone bids the player can go to talk to the club if they want and the deal is done normally and might still fall through.
Buy out clauses are the ones where its all in one go.

I think it was a cheeky gamble from us tbh, a bit like we tried the previous year with Cancello. We asked got told no, asked again got told to piss off and then tried a cheeky one again (if them getting knocked out of the CL is correct in my head). I don't think we spent a considerble amount of time on it, thats why we have Jorge and his crew doing things for us.
This is where Social Media is a pain as accounts will drag things on that have ended. Saw it yesterday where an account rehashed some words from the previous day to try and make it a new Adama story.
